Flat4
A good friend of mine runs a horse sanctuary and has worse luck with cars than me.... Her partner was in an accident the same day the clutch went on her Megane so she's been in a borrowed van for a week. She urgently needs something reliable as she has been through about half a dozen cars in the last year through break downs and vandalism. She is near Falkirk but I can give her a lift within a few hours drive. A 4x4 would be ideal due to the recent snow and location of the horses. Budget around £500 so most things considered. What's out there?

OK I know on their budget it's a distinct possibility but you know what I'm saying. A £500 4x4 is asking for trouble. It may be, but it's all they have to work with so they will have to make do. I like the Terios myself but they're not car people. They need something with a decent MOT until I get them friendly with my mechanic who can keep them right in future. Wack
I like a gamble, I'd risk £400 on that Terios hoping that it'd go through an MOT with no welding or minimal work I have a hobby business taking what people throw away , adding a bit of spit and polish and selling it on, you'd be amazed what people throw away , I bet they've looked at last years fail sheet and given up on it chodweaver
Talbot
So is a £1000 oneSo would a £1500 one. And most £2500 ones. As far as I have ever been able to see, any vehicle more than a couple of years old or with more than about 20k miles on it is a massive liability, just waiting for a gearbox failure, clutch, HGF, or any other major item of work. Granted, it's even more likely if the vehicle in question is a 18-year old £500 snotter with intergalactic mileage, but I have never seen the benefit in buying anything in the £1k-£10k range, as the extra cash spunked does not give better reliability or less likelyhood of breakdown. If I had £10k to spend on a vehicle, I'd be buying the best example of what I wanted for £1k and putting the remainder in a high-interest savings account. That way when it inevitably does shit it's clutch or spits a gasket, you're not finacially screwed. eddyramrod

Flat4
They've moved since they bought the Megane and got stranded trying to reach the horses. The Land Rover unfortunately is too much for them to insure. Saabnut, this is gonna sound weird but could you put a pic of the boot on your for sale thread please? She's concerned it won't be big enough for the dog but I would imagine it's quite spacious. She'd probably need it delivered if she was to go for it tho. Saabnut
Will take pics of the inside and boot tomorrow and post them up, it is fairly substantial though. Delivery can be done, before Tuesday when the tax comes off, for petrol and a train ticket home. The Moog and Flat4

Flat4
The dogs are tiny. I think she's looking for an excuse not to buy it now coz she's now seen a Toyota Avensis estate she fancies. I can't really argue with that but I'm waiting to see the MOT history before I pass judgement. Saabnut which train station is nearest you? I'll try to price that up. Saabnut
My nearest station is Laurencekirk. I am hearing warning bells going off, not sure I want to sell a sub 300 quid car to someone who does not really want it as I foresee a catalogue of never ending niggles. I would rather keep it "just in case" and scrap it in a years time than have that sort of hassle! DodgyBastard
Flat4
What sort of hassle? She's not the type to go nit picking and giving sellers grief. Tbh she doesn't know enough about cars for that and any that have failed on her, she's just accepted and moved on. She'll just be glad to be mobile again.
