Classic car insurance advice

My temporary insurance ran out today on my 02 and i now need to get it fully insurance. The 02 is registered in my wifes name as is her Ford Puma that we are going to sell, but her current insurer won't cover her for a classic due to her age (25).She's tried Footman James which have quoted £218 but have told her she will lose her 7 years no claims as they do not include no claims on a classic car policy and after 3 years they will be totally lost if you don't take out a standard car policy again. We thought about going back to Tesco's again but we don't think they cover classic cars, and if they do they will only value it as a 34 year old car and not a classic worth x amount. The car will be a second main car so will need full cover, What does everyone else do and who do you recommend?.

Thought NCD could only be carried for two years. Either way, as it isn't lost, I'd go that route. Can always get another modernish car in a year or two to keep the NCD going (a great excuse to get more cars!).Flux seems worth a try. Some people seem to get fantastic quotes. I once tried getting a quote on a Senator with air suspension and the four figure premium had me firmly running away!

^ that's a good idea, I'm the registered keeper and insurer on the Passat but i guess I could get her to insure it in a coupe of years (If the 02 last that long) so she keeps her no claims.I take it you don't have to be a registered keeper to have insurance on a car?.

I've used Footman James for years. I now have a multi-vehicle policy which covers all six cars for about 80 quid apiece, the "proper" classics all have agreed value, breakdown is included, named driver etc etc.Always seem to be a very professional service. Each time I get a new car I just ring up and it costs about 20 quid to add it on and the policy is adjusted at next renewal. Because it's multi-vehicle I could feasibly have a modern on there too though they don't do stand alone policies for newer cars. :)

What an old swizz this insurance lark is!Can you buy up some old, knackered chod-box with group -1 insurance on the bare minimum fire & theft policy to preserve her NCB. It wouldn't even need to be roadworthy, just create a futureshite CPTC or garden ornament. Maybe a cinquecento or similar. That said, anyone with older cars on standard policies: remember to check the print. In recent conversations to Direct Line when swapping 'Er Indoors insurnce from old to new car, she asked if they would insure a 'classic' for us too, at which point they said they would not cover any car over 15 years old. Worrying, as my 17 year old BMW is insured with them. When we voiced our concerns, it turns out they WILL cover older stuff, but only if you/the car meet stringent criteria: No manchester dole scrubber methadone users with an L-reg Astra Merit need apply (they don't anyway).

Mention it to the person taking details.I had a hard job insuring a car in my ex's name, we were taking it in turns to preserve NCB. Using confused.com and comparethemeerkat a whole load of insurers refused to quote when the policyholder wasn't the registered keeper.

Cheers for the advice guys, Just insured it though Adrian Flux as they was the cheapest in the end, £209 full comp inc legal aid and breakdown cover and they look after your no claims.Bit cheaper then Heritage, £642.70!

I use these guys as recommended by Mr B:http://www.rhclassicinsurance.co.uk/£90 for the spazda and £85 for the Escort. Like flux though, you don't use/get ncd.

We tried these guys, They are part of the same company the wifes already with, They quoted £98 for it as a 3rd car, but as a main car it went up to £690!

I looked into it a while back, but as ever nobody much does transits. Apparently they are a commercial vehicle . Footman James would insure the Mk1 panel and the ambulances , but not any other Mk2. Whilst my Mk2 is a daily driver, do they really think I would let them out with drivers again? Been had too many times with that one.... i don't think the occasional stunt driver counts, does It?

I had to transfer the Alfa to mum as the registered keeper cos Direct Line said that the insurance had to be in the name of the registered keeper & I was only a named driver on mum's insurance. Made no difference to us, it was still my car bought & paid for by me & it does stipulate that the registered keeper isn't necessarily the legal owner (but then what role does a registered keeper serve??) but for anyone who was interested in taking on the car, all they'll see is that it had another owner on the list of owners which is a touch annoying, esp if it had been previously a rare one owner old car!

If you are the user of a car legally owned by someone else, then rightfully your name should be on the V5 as Registered Keeper. Quite literally, if the police or DVLA wanted to find the car, they should contact you as you keep it.However, it may be a company car owned by your employer, or a car on finance, or something. Legally they own the car, you'll have signed a contract with them that states that. So they could just come round and take it off you, it's theirs. They're just saying that you look after it.
