1 to consider if you can take the crippling fuel costs...

Is this газ 53 самосвал (google translate = 'gas (as in petrol) 53 dumper') a Romanian Carpati (perhaps a 131 or 132)? If so it would make a fine addition to the ever expanding Dacia/ARO collection belong to the Autoshite Collective. There's some here -

According to my 1978 addition of The Observers Book of Commercial Vehicles the 131/132 had a V8 140 bhp petrol engine so deep pockets would be required to run it. Along with the armed forces of various Eastern Bloc countries, they were used by the Greek army.

Remarkably, a friend of a friend of a friend has been to look at that green/tidemark Arna. He described it as a 'rusty old banger' but mechanically sound. Interior looks gorgeous. Only problems are that it's still well over two months until we fly over, and it's about 250km away from Sofia. My contact advises me never to trust Bulgarians and that sending a deposit was a bad idea. This trip is going to be so much fun!

Some pretty strong results I'd say! They even have Wartburgs.

That Barkas looks nice and would sell well over here I suspect. It does look as though they take the number plates off the Greek stuff so there might be more hassle obtaining export plates to drive it home. Or you could take a pair of random uk plates and lots of GB stickers and hope nothing goes wrong.

Same deal in Bulgaria. Looks like bureaucracy wherever we go. However, Greek prices seem lower and it may actually be easier.

I've just been Googling buying cars in Greece and Romania and both had suggestion to buy in BG instead as its cheaper.

A plus point in Romanias favour was

Yes you can but not directly. It is not the buying it is registering it which is tricky. For example you can buy it and put red plates on it. This enables you to drive the car for 30 days. You can change a maximum of 3 consecutive red set plates, and drive with them without needing road tax (vignette) and WITHOUT paying the emission sticker which is very high (it can be depending on the car engine even a couple of thousands euros). After the 90 days you will need to get black plates. Now in order to register it you will need to
1. Have a company in Romania or
2. Get plates for it on the name of a romanian friend or
3. Lease it or
4. Get the so called temporary id card

Assuming that you can leave Romania on red plates.

More window shopping needed! We're just over a month away. Still don't know if we can actually buy anything, but dreaming is free.

The Trabby ent to Shabby. looks like a Yorkshire registered 2002 model, would't even need to change the plates. Although explaining to Sweenie Todd on the M25 that it is really a Green Ford Fester might be a challenge.
