A new thread - really what the press say about old cars...good bad and ugly. He is a first go. Sunday Times over Xmas. Surprisingly tempered. (I  dont read the Times!)

It was until February 2017, then I moved south to Glasgow. Very picturesque but in too remote a location to be practical, impossible to heat in winter and very damp as well!

I'm interested in how 'old cars' are portrayed in the popular press. Another snipped. Metro today.

I read that paper and the Beeb did a typical lazy journo/govt mouthpiece job reporting on it.

In reality,
the proposals are
1/ PFI as many new roads as possible
2/ Control traffic congestion through a price control mechanism
3/ Put it out to a public 'discussion' to soften the blow
4/ Note the public accepts congestion or pollution taxation more easily than blanket taxes
5/ implement 24/7 surveillance of everyone's movements

There were contradictions in arguments made and plans proposed, sadly typical, in England 2017, of the quality of education and ability to reason/put together something coherent.

It's all down to how you can extract the most money without people noticing, which may be ok for a casino business but when govt starts behaving in the same way, surely it's a race to the bottom.

Amazing* how the BBC managed to make it sound benevolent, reducing costs for the elderly and students.

Yea. I think the BBC is in a bind - it's struggling with what is news and what is editorial - in my opinion. So it tends to serve up the most bizarre stuff straight- faced - whatever someone's press office puts out. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks. Here is an important High Court case looking at the 'duty' of the DVLA. Interesting to see how it is decided by the Judge. Many historic racing cars are difficult to date as they are sometime bitsa's.

I hate press "stories" like this. There is something else going on. Anyone who buys a Cobra does the research. I did many months, and before I bought I knew every Cobra for sale on the net in Europe. As a result, I bought mine from a dealer who did not know as much about the car as I did and got it for a bargain price. Genuine Cobras are several million pounds so he would have been aware that at 250k it was not a 64 genuine article. A continuation cobra (built by Shelby but after the original production had ended) are 250 to 500k, so I reckon he bought an ally kit based replica thinking he could pass it off as a continuation and make a profit. Sadly for him Continuation Cobras are as well documented as the originals, so he has sold it for what an ally replica is worth.

As,  for the statement that he had to sell a car that cost him 250k for 100k because when it lost its historic class the road tax was too expensive (just over 500 quid a year) - well!

Interesting to see what the High Court Judge says - it all does seem a bit far-fetched.

But the general tone of press articles seems to be that old cars are either very valuable or very dangerous.

Isn't that the media's response to just about everything?
