What engine is in the Astra? I thought they were all 1.8 but that looks worryingly like a 1.4 SPI.

I've consulted the British Union of Rice Pudding Skins (BURPS) but their advice to members is not to worry, and I quote "he's got no fucking chance"

Ooh, could you elaborate further as to possible causes, please?

I've finally got round to replacing the straight pipe I used originally with a bit of silicone reducer, and touch wood it's holding. I'm pretty sure that pipe was weeping for a while before it properly let go.

I think the Astra is a 1.6, by God it’s slow though. Still, quite a nice place to be with the roof down though.

Went to the Mondeo before work to see what would happen when a non-knackered battery was fitted. It fired straight into life and sounded ace. Left it running 5 or 10 minutes, couldn’t see a water leak, but will see what happens when I attempt to drive it.

That just means there is no water in it :)

That astra belongs on the cover of a Leonard Cohen LP - a 1.6 auto convertible is about as desirable as a picnic on Saddleworth moor.

Well bought Billy.

Astra convertible

I was taken back to August 1993 then for a moment when I used to drive around in a new one!

2.0i went well enough.

Mrs6C hated the patten of the interior trim. The other thing Mrs6C disliked about it was I was only allowed to have it if I garaged it and Mrs6C Triumph Herald had to move outside when I used it.

Mondeo, stick some steel seal in it then run it till it falls to bits. These break quite well, calipers on back got to be worth £50 for the pair on their own.

I have a dealer laminated poster of the Astra Mk3 Cabriolet in the above satin red if anyone wants it.

A lot of these were 1.6 autos I think.

Temp is perfectly normal if its sitting idling on a hot day, should cool to about 92 or so when on the move.

Update:

Mondeo failed MOT, something about discs, front suspension arm, bulbs and something else. Quoted about £360, I think. jury is out, probably retire it to the GoG for as long as. In other news it's my son's 25th birthday today, so I posted some old photographs of him up on social media (as you do) and our old mate Reanimation (from RR, NSJK and here) reminded me (with pictures) of the time he came with me to move Mark's car to somewhere else in Manchester. No wonder the lad turned out as well as he did...

Things to do today: Buy something you have no actual use for (and that probably doesn't work properly) off a bloke who lives on a council estate and has an actual tractor in his front garden.

Discovered it goes forward and backward, haven't had time to work out if the cutting deck engages or not. Probably the latter. It was absurdly cheap though.

Also picked the Mondeo up from the MOT place having decided not to have the work done on it.

Safe tonight, it's Chester Races and all the amateur drinking bastards it brings in.

I drove through Deeside this morning in my Astra with the roof down. Old fashioned, embarrassing, stinks, nobody wants to be in it and everybody laughs at it, but that's enough about Connah's Quay.
