Uncle Jimmy
Anyone here used the cetane boosters in their diseasel? Solid chemistry behind it but I wonder if it makes much difference to mpg.
DodgeRover
kerosene or petrol would do the same job AFAIK
forddeliveryboy
Petrol does the opposite, it's only of any use in a diesel when it prevents the fuel gelling when temps drop below -15C, or if you're using soya oil which gels just above 0C. There shouldn't be any need for a cetane improver if you're using decent quality diesel, but you'd still notice some extra go. The Americans have much lower cetane diesel than us, it makes a lot of sense there especially in European high-efficiency engines. A few veggers and biodiesel makers use it, especially if the oil/feedstock is poor. Uncle Jimmy
Flat4
This may be of intrest. I'd like to try it on the Granvia but dunno where he gets the chemical from. https://www.facebook.com/StrongBrooRacing/posts/757149714485933
tommotech
I’ve used additive that has cetane boosting properties, as well as lubricity and anti-fungal agents (to kill diesel bug). I have seen improvements in economy and reduced smoke levels on vehicles without DPF. However, I have seen similar results with premium diesel, such as BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power. The only thing with premium diesels is that you cannot change the dosing ratio if a system clean is required, rather than just maintenance dosage. I tend to use them at service intervals now. jonathan_dyane
Unlikely to make any difference to a 'cooking' uk diesel running on standard diesel. Buy some beers instead.
paulplom
Not the same but, I put a squirt of two stroke oil in my transit at every tank full (about once a week). It noticeably quietens the engine down, not as much clatter etc. 115000 miles and counting. Zero issues or expense other than servicing.
twosmoke300
Even a badly maintained 1.4/1.6 hdi would scrape 115k - come back at 300k
rainagain
I heard adding acetone is supposed to be good. Some talk about it here:https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=33064
