£5k car buying challenge.

So something that picks up in price in the summer and not a German Floppy top?

£4.5k leaving you 500 quid to pay for a ropey transit to come and pick you up each time it breaks down.

Find the right bearded man and you'll make a massive* on it (unless fashions change and hipsters move on to 90's Daewoos)

My suggestions:

Suzuki Cappuccino.

Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo.  ...that noise...

Any solid classic Merc.

Any solid proper old school Volvo.  Prices on both of the above seem to be climbing in the last few years.

Citroen CX.  Though finding a really good one that won't cost you your sanity in six months is the challenge.

I've just luzzed a bid on this Morris Traveller. It's low mileage, low ownership, local and a bit of a looker! It's apparently relisted with 'lower reserve'. Just checked it out and it made £4700 last time. New MOT no advisories, I'm in on this big time if it's achievable

I 'won' this at £4500, although reserve not met. I messaged the seller asking how far we are from the reserve... he hasn't replied, but instead relisted it with no reserve. I'd messaged him earlier too asking about seat belts. It wasn't really an issue, I just wanted to start some dialogue with the bloke so he may favour dealing with me. No reply to that either.

I don't think it's a massive money maker this thing, but I figure could yield £1000 or so come summer with some effort, plus I'd enjoy owning it.

UPDATE:

Here's an update on the last few days of unsuccessfully attempting to spunk £5000...

So back to this Minor Traveller:

s-l1600.jpg

As mentioned, the dude wasn't answering messages both before and after 'winning' despite not hitting reserve. I was polite, well mannered and that, so what more can you do? Anyway, the seller relisted the car for a 24hr listing, no reserve. Despite the seller blanking me I went in again, before throwing in the towel at £4700. It went for £4800.

But onward and upwards.. this BGT had made my watch list. Mainly because it was only in Eastbourne, was low ownership and mileage, and looked bright enough. I lobbed on a bid of £3211 and was 30 seconds away when outbid. I Henman fist-pumped as I regained the lead 2 seconds before the end, only for some auction sniper twat to take the spoils at the very last second FFS. £3511

I was highest bidder on this Minor Traveller. £4500, but reserve not met

So this SL also finished today. Highest bidder at £3800. Again, reserve not met...

Had a punt at this Mini this evening too. Clearly had some paint down the sides, but always easy to sell and localish. Again highest bidder £3255 - again reserve not met... *sigh*

I know loads of people (probably me included) would advise against throwing money at a French car, but a sporting MK1 Clio might be a good bet for money returns, as they're all going up in value given the huge spike in Williams values. Heck, even a cheap one of those might be a good idea.

Ignore me otherwise....

That Merc does nothing for me, but I suppose it's the sort of thing other people like. I'm sure you could make a small profit just by taking some decent photographs at a location that isn't block-paved and writing a description that has paragraphs.

This game seems fun, but if somebody handed me £5k of somebody else's cash I'd have the ropiest Lancia Flavia coupe parked outside and, presumably, no longer be employed, so please don't take any advice from me.

Update: I've bought something.

I was getting real tired of waiting days for auctions to reach a conclusion before they're pulled or don't hit reserve or make silly money. In the end I idly threw a last second bid on something I'd added then removed from my watch list. I won it. "Shit!!" I best read the ad properly, is it good value? Er.. not really. Is it likely to turn a profit come June, possibly £500 it it's as neat at it looks in the pictures. Of course, it won't be. My first thought was to message the seller and renege on my bid. But I didn't want to become one of those twats I'm always moaning about. Also, it's just a relief to have something sorted. Game on.

Tomorrow morning I'm off to Buckinghamshire to collect and drive home the beauty*. However I'm then heading to Essex before home - It's just become a double collection! My purchase is only half hour from our other sales site. So I'm collecting my car, then driving a colleague from the other site to the other side of the M25 to collect his new purchase, then finally home. I hope it's up to it!

Plenty of clues in that collection kit.

Tyre inflator- not a Trojan.

No hammer- not a Land Rover.

No fire extinguisher - not Lotus,TVR or Reliant.

No electrical tester- not French.

Warning triangle- not Mercedes.

In Buckinghamshire not Essex - not a Ford.

Not in the Midlands- not Austin , Morris or Rover.

Therefore it's a Triumph or Lancia .

I'm afraid it's rather dull by Autoshite standards. The seller of the MGB I missed out on has messaged to say winner hasn't materialised. A tad annoying, but gives me a fall back if this turns out to be a tub.

What do you mean MGBs are dull?!

Tut.

I've only just seen this thread

I was going to suggest getting a MK2 Scrote from Eastern Europe, PeteM style, and then bombing around in it for six months. In the last few days, purchase some minilights and a wide arch kit, throw the interior away, and buy the boss's company with the profits.

Does it have to sell in Britain? I recon a nice Jag could get a good price in Germany. A mate of mine used to keep buying them and making good money.

Shhhhsh! Would you please not spread this idea? My dad used to own a real good Series III Sovereign V12HE and probably would today if his car hadn'd had a writeoff in an accident. Would like to own one once.
