I thought that with 320tourings fleet of Clio sports now all fixed, i thought it would be good time to start a thread on my new purchase and stop any shiters going through Clio cold turkey over the winter period. My collection thread is non existent due to the fact that most of my cars i buy experience there first ride on the back of my mates smiley face transit beavertail as broken, and this is no exception. So heres the beauty

IMG_20171125_081219824_HDR.jpg

Bought via the ultimate car site Gumtree, a broken car buyers wet dream. So comes with optional extras such as headlights that require cataract surgery, green moss in every orifice, three semi-slick tyres and no MOT dead battery and brake discs that look like they were recovered from the Titanic. But trying not to be outdone by any scottish shiters for the most broken clio award mine has added bonus of mullered engine, possibly ingested cambelt related. So feel free to share my clio misery. Soz if its a little new for some tastes.

I take it you're going down the new engine route?

I dare say replacing an engine is a lot easier than some of the other jobs on these things.

Make sure you have someone with a working one so you can get a shot and remind yourself why you're going to all the trouble. They are worth it but can be a right pain in the arse sometimes.

Yeah needs a new engine and various bits and pieces to pass an mot, did consider repairing engine but engines are reasonably cheap and available. Alabama I didn't pay a great deal for it.

Good on the not paying a lot. My mate had one as only his second car about 15 years go (can't remember when they came out) in the same colour. He drove it like a nutter and had to sell it for a deposit on a house.

Anyway, new engine? Can't be fixed and save yourself loads of money and time? Or it it just easier to do the whole thing at once?

I did consider fixing it, only briefly though especially when I priced it up.
Cambelt water pump and dephaser £250+
Tools to fit or pay someone else £120-250
Head gasket and bolts £80-100
Then repair the head and change valves - guestimates of £150++++
I would like to repair it as never removed a head before, but my man maths says it's not worth it, as engines can be had for between £2-300. If I could find one with a recent belt and dephaser that would be a result.

Bugger that's a lot of work to do and Tbh if I hadn't done it I'd consider doing it too just to see if I could but the money and time thing will always out weight everything.

Must’ve been quite a new and expensive car at the time, this is a 182 I think as it’s 04 plate, so guessing your mates was a 172 which if mk2 ph2 facelift came out on 51 plate I think so max 2 years old.

I love these, had a 04 plate mk2 ph3 Dynamique with 172 spoiler and 15” versions of the 172 wheels in 2007 (standard ph3 Dynamique spec) And always aspired to the 182 FF with cup spoiler and suspension packs but alas a 20yr old car valeter couldn’t afford a 3 year old 182.

For me these were the ultimate modern hot hatch, light, nimble, had the character of old school hot hatches as in not grown up and too refined and watered down like mk5 Golf GTis, Astra Mk4 GSis etc, fun to drive, engaging, fast, a drivers car, good looking and stylish, practical, nice interior, and mega spec for a Clio with the xenons, half leather, climate control, cruise control, decent sound system, a good allround package. I’d still have a tidy one even now, if there are any that aren’t thrashed or hanging or needing loads of work.

The first 'new' car I remember being excited about was a mates dad's brand new S reg 3 door clio on this shape in a burnt orange colour. Then my step mum got a V plate green 3 door a while later. They are nice looking things.

Tbh I can't remember if it was a 172 or 182 it might have been a trophy as well??

I do remember it was expensive he traded another Clio that he'd got brand new only a couple of years before, they were both what I would call a mk3.

I drove it and it was nice but for me the seats were a bit wired, I could never get it in the right position.

Trophy was later I think, around 2005, could’ve been a 172 Cup however, which was basically a 172 without some of the toys/niceties of the full fat one so no xenons, climate, cloth Dynamique style seats, base model one piece rear seat, standard CD player stereo etc.

Kinda like what a 306 Rallye was to the GTi-6.

Had a day out doing some shopping for the Clio, only 470 miles and 11 hours of driving in one session ffs. Thoroughly amazing considering travelling 40 miles to look at a car is right on the cusp of my cba scale.

Screenshot (26).png

I have to admit that doing that mileage in one day nearly broke me and a big thanks to the bell end that nearly run me off the road on the M23, respect for anyone who does this day in, day out for a living. Never guess what i have in the back of my van now!!

If i had that twat in the back of my van i would have disposed of him in the Dartford tunnel. Anyway with my van been Lez compliant i was hoping this was in the back. Coronation Street fans will get the picture.

rama-6.png

But back to reality, this is what was in the back. Hope it was worth the journey and not lemon like Wacks engine. Can't see it running this weekend Dome, maybe a weekend in 2019 though.

Prices are really all over the place for these, there are alot of dreamers out there wanting top dollar. But there are too many on road, if they were rare then fair enough. Really surprised ph1's aren't getting expensive as IMO they are the spiritual successor to 205 GTi.

The difference I found was the Renner guys, even the fanbois, tend to accept that they do have issues and break and keep a sense of humour about it.

The VAG fanbois on the other hand...

Done a little bit more on the Clio, but not had much time to spend on it due to doing christmas stuff, pub trips etc and due to the fact i have no electric in my garage yet, so i can only work when its light with the door open, and its blood freezing, so only working on it for an hour at a time, so progress is slow.

IMG_20171208_152957025.jpg

Seems to come apart easy enough, anyway start taking plenum off and inlet off.

IMG_20171211_155422935.jpg

If your not into your Clio's everything looks fine and dandy, but this is a 182 and that's not a 182 engine, but a 172 engine (slightly different but fundamentally same), all the breather system on top is different and alledgedly not interchangeable. So this bad boy will be on its third engine when i fit my 'new' one. Anyway the 172 breathes in a couple of places so the pipe on top can be blanked off or directed to a catch can. But the mechanic who changed the motor obviously thought chewing gum, putty or whatever the hell it was stuck to the breather would be adequate. Quality bodging.

IMG_20171211_155647408.jpg

Not had the cambelt cover off to see what caused the initial failure, as its part of the engine mount, and run out of light.

I like Mk2 Clios. We bought both daughters one to learn to drive in and Daughter No. 2 still has her Phase 2 Dynamique plus after nearly 7 years. She'd like a 182 now, but as she just taught her boyfriend to drive and put him on the insurance, that's probably on the back burner for now. I still look at for sale Racing Blue & Liquid Yellow 182s for her though!

By the way the Trophy was only in Capsicum Red so easy to tell.
