Uncle Jimmy Posted December 9, 2017 Author Share Posted December 9, 2017 I found the gearknob to be ideally situated myself; in fact I find reaching up to the gear knob on my T5 to be strange in comparison. Jimbo Posted December 11, 2017 Share Posted December 11, 2017 I’ve had two of these one identicle to this one which I owned for 8plus years and a 2.5tdi 88ps which I bought in 2004 and still own both used within my electrical contracting company. Best van ever in my book having been abused their whole lives and still happily take more. Still use the 51 plate every day mostly doing 1.5 miles each way taking my dogs out to the countryside for a walk and used as a spare works van and for hauling large heavy items, it’s a 1200kg model which I think is quite rare?I would drive it anywhere though at the drop of a hat it’s just one of those motors you know will do anything asked of it within reason including towing way more than what it’s supposed to! You are correct about the gearknob, ours has had an extension added so the Mrs can reach it easier. Still got this problem in other areas too! dieselassist Posted December 11, 2017 Share Posted December 11, 2017 The pre- 96 'square bumpered one are very simple n straightforward to work on (well everything bar changing out gearbox's n clutch's) n the 1.9D can be upgraded/engine swopped easily enough to ahu/1z tdi with a bit of plug n play of the engine loom connectors at the back of the fusebox - I had a 1.9D SWB one years back; it took a lotta abuse... my brother later had a battered 2.4D 97; none of clocks bar the speedo ever worked in it; he eventually sold it to some African lads for a profit; their plan was to fill it full of Toyota n Pug engines n ship it off to North Africa... ...all cheap T4's are now quickly vanishing from these shores; the are apparently all being bought up, nshipped in truck loads over to UK to appease the scene tax/parts industry there.... Otherwise the flexible plastic strip electrical connectors can develop tiny cracks which can be carefully bridged with a bit of solder....taws 'aquired' from a mutual friend of ours who is a plasterer (I owed my brother a few hundred quid, n over drinks, our mate agreed to a convolted swop involving an SIP 'fireball' (I think) kerosene garage heater- too big for my small unit, but useful for him to quickly dry out a finished 'site pastering job' ), so the inside was full of dust n crud when he got it; I think we 'hosed/power washed the worst of it out' (you can do this to the front interior as its basically just rubber matts on the front of it), so we avoided any 'unessential dash disassembly' so as not to disturb any more dust/plaster deposits.... The side door was prone to detaching itself at speed (so inside lane driving only) and the rear hatch window was 'remade' in thick plywood n bathroom sealer (pic below hopefully) - a very 'hardy van' pic below of his 2.4 (hopefully)... my blue 'early 1.9D SWB had 'sweet bodywork'- very straight but was a bit of a worn out nail mechanically; only 2 loose inner cv joint bolts, missing 5th gear when I got it, run on veg/engine oil by previous owner (replaced the inj' pump with a vento one etc etc) but it was duly cobbled back together over n over n was 'kept going'....
