He's said anything over £100 will take it, which seems fair, but it'd be nice to know just how kippered the engine is.

Visas are ace. Somebody buy it.

Oh come on. Buckinghamshire is still technically the south of England. That's no distance at all! Especially not when there's a place near Brighton that'll loan you a beavertail for £100 for the day.

I don't have a functioning car of any description at the moment, and I really need to sort that out before taking on yet another long-term project. I don't really want a water-cooled Visa anyway.

From Belfast?!!!! Bit of a treck. I've my own transporter... would be an expensive enough beginning to a project..

Going by my checks it would take 2 days... 8hrs 45mins estimated one way.

Exciting interest. Could this be the start of a rescue.
Engine is a runner just rattles a bit on the top end. Some Peugeot engines may fit or supply bits don't know about Renault 1.4 units.

Rattle on the top end?TADTS.
The engine is leaning back at close to 90 degrees so doing the valve clearances is difficult. The exhaust is best done from under the car.So they don't get done very much or get done badly.
I once worked on a very noisy one of these
but shut it up completely by carefully setting the clearances by finding out the thread pitch of the adjusters , closing them up completely then winding them back the correct number of turns to give the exact clearance.
Very hard to set correctly with feeler gauge.
