I grease mine every month.    Doesn't stop the rest of the car falling apart, though.

Beautiful day today!

Mojo slowly returning!

Forgot to take a before photo but I put a couple of plates on the Wolseley today, first ones of the year.IMG_20180313_135613.jpg hard to get a pretty weld on thin steel but it will be ground down and filled so who cares!

Had time to do one more plate. A simpler shape than the last oneIMG_20180313_140027.jpg IMG_20180313_145926.jpg

That'll do for today. I'll have to get the wing off to tackle the rest...

I snapped a ball join on a Niva once and I have no desire to repeat that so the trunnions will be respected!

That certainly sounds like a plan! Good progress on the Holesley, that's a lot of work!

Right, today I finally bit the bullet and got the left hand wing offIMG_20180321_104002.jpg
Bit holy under thereIMG_20180321_103929.jpg IMG_20180321_110312.jpg

Now this isn't a Granada coupe restora
tion so originality is not an issue. Also my banger racing experience came in handy so the missing box section that should be made of thin tin is now thick box section straight from the stockholdersIMG_20180321_104553.jpg IMG_20180321_171042.jpg
But there is always more to doIMG_20180321_171055.jpg IMG_20180321_103951.jpg
Found this half done plate that had been put on many years ago

Absolutely brilliant work. You have my fullest admiration. Just wonderful to see it being brought back to life. I've been in love with these ever since that yellow one (which lived just up the road from me when I were a nipper) was on the custom show circuit. It was featured in Hot Car in April 73 and March 76, and Street Machine in March 84. Last time I saw it in the metal many years ago it was red with a big block V8. I always thought it was the bee's knees and have lusted after them ever since.

I grew up near Tunbridge Wells, Kent. The reg of the one I knew was 620 LPH, though the last time I saw it way back it was re-registered as OSL 109. DVLA reveals its tax last expired in 2002, so I suspect the worst. I remember as a nipper being overtaken by it as I was pushbiking over to the stock car racing at Cross-in-Hand (anyone remember that?).

Interestingly, the current Practical Classics features a Scimitar in the Your Cars section, whose owner lives in Knighton and says he owns a Wolseley 1500 with a 5.8 litre Chevy V8. Wish they'd published a pic of that....hmm..the plot thickens...

I look forward to that. It'd be great to think it might be the one I remember. After all, how many V8 W1500's can there be. Last time I saw it back in the 90's it was red with a flip front and Riley grille (though I much preferred it in its 70s yellow metalflake phase).

Anyway, we digress. Congrats again on the fabulous work on your own resto.

Not having touched it for ages, today I decided it was Holeseley day.

So I took some paint stripper to the front wing and removed several layersIMG_20180529_155620.jpg
Then while that was drying i took an angle grinder to the front panelIMG_20180529_155641.jpg
Cut a piece of Audi bonnet to fit and welded it inIMG_20180529_163330.jpg
As I was cleaning up the area with the grinding disc i noticed some small holes that I had missed with the first plateIMG_20180529_170227.jpg I find it easier and quicker to do it this way rather than cut the lot out at once and try and fabricate a large area in one go.
Welds don't need to be pretty, it all gets linished off anywayIMG_20180529_180716.jpg then a thin smear of fibreglass to seal the welds just in case of any pinholesIMG_20180529_181644.jpg
But as usual, that area isn't quite done... I could have done this bit today but it was quite humid and I couldn't be bothered reallyIMG_20180529_181649.jpg
Not to worry. No rush. Maybe next week

No, just a neighbour's Talbot camper I agreed to weld up ( good plan this, if you fix the neighbour's shite then they can't grumble about my grinding noise or paint fumes when I work on my own projects)
I shall do some more work on the Holeseley today, in between Talbot bodgeryIMG_20180606_112311.jpg

So now, that corner is finally welded! ( apart from one tiny hole)

Used one of these to remove several layers of paintIMG_20180606_145751.jpg IMG_20180606_145745.jpg
Vicious buggers, you really need full face protection as when bits fly off they really hurt!

They are a fiver each so not cheap, and they don't last that long but they are the best way to remove several layers of old paint without using paint stripper. They don't damage the metal much either.

This corner is now ready for filler!

It's quite an intricate shape. Lots of different curves going in different directions. It's never going to be perfect, or even anywhere near which is annoying after all that work. But it will get it on the road.

Will tidy up the wing edge when the wing is on. I'll weld up the edge of the wing, then fill the edges of both together so they meet perfectly.

Not this week though, had enough of bodywork for now...

Oh and I think I've decided what colour the sides of the Wobseley will be:IMG_20180608_154210.jpg
Fiat Bianco Corfu...

It's a creamier white than it looks on the photos. Would prefer Old English White but I'm trying to spend as little as possible in this project.

Ordered more than I needed to for the Talbot so that'll do!
