Have to admit I was tempted by this, very tempted. No room for it, no real need for it and yet another continuous tax and insurance liability but it was the distance that stopped me. If matey's going to camper it up for profits he can't go far wrong, it's a lot of tricky work and easy to wind up a stripped out and abandoned hulk with a big hole in the roof, at which point the scene tax makes breaking a lucrative diversion. Probably easier to look out for a sub 2K rotted out snotter that's already converted over the upcoming Xmas period of desperation, one weekend of wobbing it up, another of tarting up the interior with sticky backed plastic, black and white chequered floor and a couple of huge speaker holes, not forgetting taking a jigsaw to the table to butcher it vaguely into the shape of a cocking surfboard and plaster everything with those ghastly re-arranged swastika VW symbols. It's all about the image brah.

I was looking and drooling over this too - but was talked out of it by the distance (although as Cobblers has been all over it you know it'll be OK) but also a friend mentioned they don't have much leeway for towing - so couldn't be put into service for that (I really need to replace the Pajero with something/anything).

Can anyone in fact confirm that as true?

I've fitted towbars to them in the past, just go in place of the bumper irons nice and easy, never towed with one but should be as good as any car, my Auntie used to regularly drag a bull in a trailer around some rough old terrain behind an old Beetle without breaking it so I'd imagine a big squared off liquid cooled version of a Hitlermobile would manage.

Why is it commonly referred to as a T25?

I think it's also to do with the fact that the chassis number starts with 25...

My stock and well-worn 1.9DG model tows the Portafold quite happily.   The folding caravan weighs about 7 cwt (350kg or thereabouts) but probably approaches 500kg when fully laden.   Stability and traction are never an issue but hill-climbing can be, as can actually seeing the thing in the mirror.   I don't know about the auto model, never driven one of those.

Regarding the T25/T3 nomenclature, I notice the later T4 and T5s come in different payload/spring ratings and these have their own sub-series like T27, T28 etc.    Strictly speaking all early air-cooled Transporters are Type 2 (not just the Bays)  because it is the 2nd type of body layout on the original Volkswagen.    I think Wolfsburg just made it up as they went along.....

Des's tale of a bull in a trailer behind a Beetle is conjuring up some images, though!

I don't want you to think I'm obsessed by this...

The beetle is the type 1

The split is the type 2 - T1
The bay is the type 2 - T2
The 't25' is the type 2 - T3

The fastback/squareback is the type 3

The VW411/412 is the type 4

Golf type 17

The Mk 1 Scirocco is the type 53
The later Mk 2 Scirocco is the type 53b
Corrado type 53L

There are lots, but the t25 isn't!

I've owned 6 T25's  over the past 15 years ...

I've often been in to VAG main stealers in the past to buy parts before they became unobtainium.

When I asked for parts for said T25 they would always ask me for the reg number ...

'Thats no good' I would say 'its a left hand drive import' Then they would say 'what year is it?'

'1989' I would reply ... 'Ahh ok a T25?'  the VOLKSWAGEN MAIN DEALER  PARTS BLOKE would say to me ... 'Yes'. that's the one' ! I would reply .

The 80s  'wedge' was  designated T3 in Europe except the UK ... The T25 Monika was not made up by a bloke in the pub but by VAG  UK. ......

Scene twats in the UK decided to adopt the T3 Monika in the UK including that grumpy nothern bloke who runs Brickwerks and started the Brickyard forum which is dedicated to the T25/T3

Manufacturer's  do change the model names/numbers for different markets ....

In the UK the 80s wedge Transporter was designated T25 by VAG UK not T3.
