Japanese automatic car wanted

After 17 years it is time to retire my mother's Almera.

The clutch is going, its high on tax, bad on fuel and only 3 doors so it no longer ideal for her pensioner friends either.

Criteria:

Good on fuel (40 mpg minimum round town)

Lowish tax (£150 per year max)

4 or 5 door

Of Oriental origin, preferably Japanese

No mechanical faults

Minor bodywork issues not objected to ( mother will dent I guarantee you)

£2000 maximum price but lower preferred!

Evidence of service history not essential but must be a well looked after example

Preferably within a reasonable distance of Ludlow ( 80 miles? ) although if a trusted shiter further afield has something then I would travel further.

Age not an issue, a late nineties, early 2000s Toyota or Honda would be great so long as the tin worms haven't got to it.

You lot know what I favour by now surely. I am happy to pay the going rate or even slightly over it for a decent example that will last indefinitely with minimum expenditure.

Nothing much on eBay. Anybody know of anything?

I was going to say, that's a very wordy post for: WANTED, Honda Jizz. Should be able to bag a GD in CVT flavour no problem for the budget.Go for 2005> though. Some of the early ones can be a bit sheddy because rubbish paint.

Jazz would do nicely. But a late nineties Civic or Corolla with low miles for £500 would be fine too.

Toyota Yaris 1.3 vvti. 40mpg easily, 5 doors, rock solid engine, cam chain, seem to resist rust fairly well, good high seating position, easy to get in and out of, £130 a year tax.

there is bound to be one for sale locally. You're not having mine because its such a good car!

I am half heartedly selling my corolla . Rash impulse buy. There is a for sale thread on here somewhere. It's a 94 1.3 hatch. Gsi no less. Auto. 13.00 a month tax and not bad on petrol. Needs front tyres soon . I have serviced it when I got it a couple of months ago. Fair few scratches but drives fine.

On the jazz, check the rear tyre well to see if it's full of water. They can suffer from quite a few boot leaks that can be a nuisance to track down.

Also CVT needs to have its fluid changed on time for it to not have problems.

Boot leaks are either the seams in the top of the roof/ 1/4 panel /boot aperture panel . Easy fix with clear sealer . Or , rear door membranes - fix with sealer again .

Cvt does need regular fluid changes to prevent pull away judder . There is actually a start clutch mod available but a good flush usually sorts them out .

Rear wheel bearings fail regularly and the usual lack of servicing kills the engines ( 8 spark plugs remember )

Jazz is a good choice provided the cvt box is in tip top fettle.

The 2002-2007 Civic is a nice motor and the automatics are usually part of the Executive trim so your Mum will have many many bells and whistles to play with, all of which should work.

I've said it before but that will last another 20 years with minimal maintenance.

Everyone and I mean everyone drives a Toyota in West Africa, every taxi is that shape or slightly newer (AMC pacer style) Corolla, they are amazing and bombproof, really great cars.
