I adore the look of these but the AWD system (viscous fluid??) puts me off. I've heard stories about how you have to replace all four tyres at once otherwise it does bad things and becomes two wheel drive?

Not that it matters much for snokaos....most heavy FWD Volvos are good snow weapons.

These are often driven by proper posh people, not necessarily super wealthy, just vey posh. I had a customer that owned a big farm in North Bucks and an Estate in Scotland that he drove the Volvo to in August, reckoned he was Scottish but sounded like Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Anyway he bought a new one of these every 3 or 4 years, during that time I doubt they ever got washed and always full of dogs, an Audi AllRoad would have been too flash and there's not a Subaru dealer around here, so I don't know what else he could have driven( obviously had a battered 90 with Ifor Williams top and a Bentley that he never drove, just got driven in)

Only the very early XC Volvos used a viscous coupling. This 2005 one has a Haldex system with an electrically operated clutch to engage the drive to the rear axle when wheel slip is detected. It is quite reliable system but a bit of a fiddle to service as there are three separate oil-filled components; angle drive, bolted to the main gearbox; Haldex clutch unit, and separate rear differential. However so long as the tyres fitted are all the correct size, uneven wear is not going to cause any problems to the AWD system as the car is basically front-wheel-drive in normal use. This is based on my experience with ours after a year of (ab)use. Not often snokaos here in Pembrokeshire but loads of mud and slimy weed-covered slipways to haul boatshite up though - we love it!
