I think there's different ways it can be done depending on the severity of rot and how involved (how expensive) you want it to get and the skill of the welder. It can involve dropping or even removing the subframe but at the moment my main priority isn't concours but just making sure the subframe is attached to the car properly. It's been the final curtain for many of these.

These W124s do seem very prone to proper rot. I would probably sell it too, but it depends on the extent of it and how nice the rest of the car is (it does look to be an attractive old thing in the photos.)

I've seen loads of these and had a few, they rot much less than most other cars which came out in the 80s. But it isn't so simple - manufacturers play around with steel quality, paint quality and some in the late 80s and early 90s started galvanising. Volvo 200-series rotted badly, their replacement didn't.

So yes, I'd choose a C3 Audi 100 or '86-'91 80 to live on the seafront, similarly the last couple of years of BXs were generally rot-resistant. Other PSA stuff became equally good at resisting rust, and seems to have remained good (Audis haven't). Meanwhile, MB had so over-engineered the 124 they'd spent its entire production life working out how to make it cheaper.

By 1993 they knew a new model wasn't far off so accelerated the process, reducing steel quality again which together with more power and poor water-based paint, wasn't exactly the quality they were known for at the time. Problem is, they're a complex and awkward to repair structure - see the curved box sections.

But the metal where the rear sf bolts on is a fairly easy but to sort, unless previously bodged or the corrosion is widespread in the area.

It's still a coveted model. The om606 (non-turbo) in this is a very sought after engine for various reasons: Bottom end can take big power, the pump is very robust, OMGHGF is almost unheard of, and will run on literally anything that burns. Diesel, Heating oil, Veg oil, LHM, Gearbox oil, ATF, frigging anything.

The fuel pumps on 605/6s are lubricated with sump oil rather than using the fuel itself, but running on straight heating oil wouldn't be good for longevity. They're more prone than any other popular vegmobile for ring gumming, too.

The fuel system at the engine end can be an expensive nightmare on these even on the fuel they're designed for, let alone veg or other odd stuff. The earlier OM602/3 are the more reliable, if not as able to tune to 3-400hp.

...preferably a 100 CS with the Fuchs alloys and red lens tail light clusters.

The zinc coating probably didn't add much weight, but the paint process was something else.

The paint was definitely too notch. My '88 quattro Avant was goodenuff, but know just what you mean about CS/Fuchs.

Hi all, if this merc turns out to be worth bothering with (should find out early next week) I think I'll sell on my BMW e46 330d. Im a bit loath to as it's brilliant, but for some reason smoking about in a beaten up w124 appeals more.

I thought I'd offer it here as is cheap, the other option is to re MOT it (it expires end of the month) and stick it on e bay for rather more.

BMW 330D TOURING auto, 2000 x reg

Swirl flaps removed and blanked, the crankcase breather filter was switched out at the same time from the original looroll design to the non clogging vortex model. Engine re-mapped to Stage 2 by Radical Remaps in Exeter. This has brought the car to approx 220bhp/460nm

OEM Xenon's with auto leveling, paired with after-market angel eyes. Full black leather interior in good condition, no rips, scratches or holes. Aftermarket entertainment system, designed for the e46 so retains a neat oem look. This system has a dedicated ipod input (30 pin), making the ipod fully controllable from the touchscreen (not just play, pause, skip). All track details, playlists etc are visible on the screen. The cable is routed into the glovebox so you can plug your ipod away out of sight and forget about it. The lead for the usb channel is also in the glovebox. The system has a rearview camera already installed in the bootlid which activates as soon as you put the car into reverse, regardless of whether the stereo is on. The system has a great navigation program, and the CD drive also plays DVDs. The system has inputs on the back for DAB and TV should you wish to add these features. Bluetooth streaming of music and handsfree phone operation with address book sync. Steering wheel controls function correctly with the unit. You can customise the screen i.e background colour and button colour when the headlights are on.

Maintenance:

Within the last 6 months: Gearbox from a facelift model fitted to due reverse failure, replacement gearbox came from a car having done 102k miles. 4 new tyres Nov 17. June 17 aircon service, solid rear brake line replaced. April 17 replacement turbo hose, gearbox bushes, prop shaft centre bearing, fuel rail pressure sensor. March 17 rear brake pads. Jan 17 both rear shocks and top mounts. Drives well with no clonks or sloppiness. The handbrake sometimes sticks.

Bad points: Being nearly 20 years old it does have some rust on the arches, fairly common in e46s this age. Mileage is pretty high (213k remember that the new gearbox has half the mileage though), but for a 6 cylinder diesel this can be expected as they are designed to run. MOT to end of June.

I will post more pics up tomorrow, located Tavistock, I'd like £500

By "shabby chic" aka fucked w124 estate continues to demand and receive attention. The battery died yesterday so a new one has been sorted. Also receiving attention has been the damaged front end.

Pre op. The top of the bonnet slam panel needed slight straightening and I "persuaded" the bonnet back more into shape.

Fleet update.....

1.

Disgracefully rotten w124 now has new subframe mounts and adjacent floor (shame on you Daimler-Benz)and has returned to front line service (pictured on a chip shop run)....

post-4673-0-73278100-1529697666_thumb.jpg

2. Plus new incoming shite from my neighbour Steve...

post-4673-0-02671700-1529697774_thumb.jpg

A naughty vendor had lied about a chronic misfire which was consistent with HGF but just turned out to be water in the plug recesses (some bright spark had power washed the engine bay apparently). MOTless and vandalised it was dirt cheap, Steve bought it to break but chucked it in for an MOT and it unexpectedly passed. As part of the purchase deal a bit of parking, rot and vandal damage is being sorted....

Oh dear. Poking at the merc OSF inner wing seemed like a good idea at the time.....post-4673-0-28116400-1529832679_thumb.jpg

The rusty bits that remain are largely previous gas welded patches that extend up to and behind the shock mount and further Back there are are a couple of holes around the rear inner arch/ footwell. Oddly the opposite site is factory untouched. A previous smash repair? I then did an HPI on it and it's clean as far as that goes. I'm not sure what to do really, I feel my welding and fabrication isn't up to it. My neighbour is a good welder and says hel do it I I want him to but the question he posed to me is is it worth it? Annoyingly I've just had all that welding done on the rear end.

Whether I sort it or not I wasn't happy driving the kids round on it so deliberately sought out a £250 stop gap that's galvanised. I've had enough of rust!post-4673-0-02462100-1529833318_thumb.jpg

Oh dear. I'm going to say that's terminal unless you're deeply in love with it and want to spend 1000's grafting in a new front end. That's way, way past patching up I don't think I'd want to drive it either!

The Audi looks alright though. Was it cheap because there was a child stuck in the sunroof? :)

I think the whole arch including the strut top would need to

Come out so you’d have to be careful with alignment etc.

I think I’d is sell it on to someone who can do the work themselves or break it to let others live on.
