With winter fast approaching our thoughts turn to putting away our most cherished* chod and smoking about in something we don't mind getting covered in icy, salty road smegma.

I have been doing quite a few more miles than usual lately so I've been thinking about selling my Ford Exploder and buying something more economical, (who needs a 4wd in the winter) Cue the chap I share workshop space with, he's got an old bmw 530d sans mot but apparently only needing a little fettling to get it back on the road.

With very little negotiation the deed has been done and I now own this...

From a cursory inspection it will need a set of tyres, a low pressure fuel pump and the handbrake needs tampering with (I suspect new shoes as the po said he's adjusted them up for the last couple of mot's). In it's favour, it's got full leather, loads of toys that all seem to still work and it's a manuel for ease of driftage..

Wcpgw? a 180hp rwd wagon to smoke about this winter.

I think we could turn this into a bit of a competition for the most unsuitable wbod, the winner will be chosen by the numbers of likes and silly comments and the prize will be some bits of motor related tat I find in the workshop.

So, what you got for the upcoming silly season?

A choice of two POS vans.

The Inca is going in for an MOT a week on Monday, if it doesn't need a lot I'll drive it for a bit while I get the Berlingo exhausted and welded.

There's a Caddy spares van nearby that I can take parts off for free with winter tyres but the 90s 4x100 Ronda wheels are almost welded on.eb523aa0be58115972c3af3e20ae1fdb.jpga5c013499d9b08cf3bbbb3efa6512b79.jpg

Iirc it works fine to start and then goes cold? If so, maybe set it to hot and then disconnect the flap control motor. Heat regulation then can be done by opening windows. ;)

You are correct, that is an option I've thought of myself too.

I keep meaning to go googling to work it out, but haven't got around to it yet. It's bound to be something daft like the motor turns a wheel that slips on a shaft when hot...

Not really in a position to buy much at the moment unfortunately, so it's probably going to be the silver Rover - a pair of snow tyres on the front and the LSD should mean it can get through whatever the Norfolk weather throws at it (probably not much going on the last few years).

Is that a FWD Cadulac?

Absolutely not!  Huggy is a proper one!  Engine pointing the right way, driving the proper set of wheels through a proper gearbox.  Perfect for all conditions. ;)

Also, weighing two and a half tons or so means that should nature take over and throw me at something... I'm going to win.

Eldorados were FWD iirc. Until 78? Based on the Olds Toronado.

That's one of the very few things yanks did better than us. They saw the stupidity of FWD & stopped doing it.

Yeah those all BMWs and Mercedes NEVER get stuck in snow do they? And they defiantly don't get stuck while every other FWD car ever trundles past without drama.

The last few times it snowed properly I trundled past loads of stuck FWDs in a Jag or Merc (depending on year) with old summer tyres on. 90% of it is drivers being dumb and not allowing for the conditions.

One trick I've found in big RWD autos is to slip them into neutral at about 5mph when stopping. If not you can lock the fronts when going to slowly for the ABS to trigger & it'll just keep going forwards with the power from the idling engine going to the rear.
