VAG shite snot green MK3 polo won't unlock.

My girlfriends eldest has a 1999 MK3 Polo 1litre in povo spec so as you can imagine it's quite grim inside and doesn't come with central locking power steering etc.

It's running like a pile of shite on 3 cylinders and hasn't moved since the mot about 4 months ago so I said I would throw a set of leads on it and change the rotor arm (which is glued on) as it still has a distributor then give it a service, so I jumped started the car and took the battery off to recharge the thing and it now starts so that's something I guess but sounds awful but I'm hoping it's just the hydraulic tappets as it makes a bit less noise after about 5 minutes.

But the thing is you can lock the car up ok but when you turn the key in the door lock to unlock the thing both doors don't unlock but the key turns ok so you have to climb in the boot so I wondered if there's a quick fix.

It wouldn't really matter as the car is never locked anyway but as she's moving to Hastings next month I thought I better get the locks working.

I think there is a bit of the lock that breaks off and causes this issue. Check on somewhere like ClubPolo or VWAudi forums.

There is a kit available from vw to fix this very thing - if I remember correctly it was about £20 per side - comes with a new paddle, spring and ring - means you can still use your existing key as well - a bit fiddly to fit (having three hands to do it is a help!) but it's dooable with a vice to hold the handle/key - used to sell loads of these about 10 years ago (god I feel old now!)

He is correct, I have done this very job on a later Polo but the older ones can suffer too. My only advice is the cheap £5 eBay kits work but I had to trim the spring with some snips to get it to fit properly, easy job though.

You undo the black Torx screws holding the locking mechanism near the door latch and lever the lock out from the outside of the door and strip down, replace the parts and refit. The handle stays in place if it's anything like the 9N Polo.

Thanks for all the help it must be a Vag thing as I had a similar problem with one of those pretend Beetles a few years back with a door handle.

So being that the car is worth about a fiver I decided it would only get the best quality part from China as my girlfriend only splashed out about £50 on it parts for the thing last week which I've still got to fit sometime.

The only thing this car has going for it is it's actually rot free and actually went though a ticket somehow which must be a first but the snot colour is growing on me but this one is going to be playing cambelt roulette so after this there's no money getting thrown on it so two quid is the limit lol.

Just did this on mine last week- I'm smoking around in a 6n2 1.0 from 2001. Vw cant make anything good inside doors since the Mk2 Golf. Window regulator next on my list and its windy up ones. Handles fit either side as my passengers door worked but not the drivers- so I swapped them over until Igotaroundtuit.

You can get a whole handle with lock and 2 keys for a tenner- better than a sping in the eye...

Cheers Barry I've done just that as I took the handle off yesterday and found that the handle was a pattern part anyway so the repair kit wouldn't work on it.

Also I found a genuine spare handle in the boot of the car with a broken lock which looks like some one had bought one from a scrappy and tried changing the locks on it but couldn't get it apart so that wasn't much use either as I couldn't make a goodun out of the two.

So I got a handle off an eBay uk seller in the end for under 8 quid so hopefully that should last the mot out and thanks for the fitting advice as I would of most probably removed the door panel and stripped the door down etc to do the repair only to find out that one torx screw is all I need to take the handle off.
