An ongoing Legacy?

The car below has sold now, no need for anybody to view it any more.

I'm not sure where to post this, so I'm starting a new thread.

I've seen a (potentially) lovely Subaru Legacy for sale, going by the area code and the distance from my postcode, it's in North Ayrshire, Ardrossan to be specific. The ad is short, and only has 2 photos. However, it's £600 with 4 recent tyres and a year old cambelt. Short MOT but the MOT history is clean. Decent mileage too, at only 105k.

Is anybody nearby able to take a quick gander at it? I've not even contacted the seller or anything yet. Beer tokens available.

I don't want anybody to go massively out of their way, or anything, but a wee look at it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Side note: My parents have a 2005 Legacy Outback (so it's the next generation from this one) and it's a lovely drive. I've also test driven a Legacy of the same generation as this one in Ayrshire before. I didn't buy that one because it was scabby as fuck and waaay overpriced. However, I do have a thing for them. They're not kick-in-the-back fast, but lovely and smooth. I reckon I'd quite like to own one. Insurance on them seems about the same as the Xantia is right now, so no bother there. Also, pre-2001 tax means it'll be the same as the Xantia too!

Im about 20-25 miles from Ardrossan and would be free to take a look over it for you, problem is I know next to nowt about Subarus and whether to say if it would be a good buy or not, I mean sure I could tell you if the pads were worn, if the tyres were shot, if it was rusty or had any obvious body damage, whether it blew out blue smoke, rattled like a bastard, the usual obvious stuff, but not being a mechanic or even clued up on mechanics apart from the basics Id be apprehensive about saying "seems ok for the dough" then you arrange to see it yourself or stick down a deposit and your definition of ok is entirely different to mine.

Only thing I do know about Subarus is they are bad for underside rot due to poor rustproofing.

What you listed was precisely what I was looking for, really. Just a look-over for the general stuff applicable to any car, and whether it looks as good from all angles besides the front and the driver's side, and if the interior is in a state or not, and whether it has paperwork to back up the recent work.

Nothing Subaru-specific needed. I can figure that stuff out myself. :D

I know of a place I can go for underseal too.

They are a fantastic car, handle really well. The saloons tend to have belonged the type you want to buy from and be better cosmetically looked after. Check its got oil in it , they use a bit and its amazing how little they need to keep going, until they don't. Check for death rattle, rev slowly from idle up to 4000 ith, if its been run low on oil you will hear it, they can go on for years even with a bit of bottom end noise but best avoided if you can :) the only other biggie would be if the clutch is slipping. If you get it and need any bits let me know. :) re timing belt, its no bigie on these and the belts are serious heavy duty things and j have NEVER had one let go, and have been through litterally hudreds of them. :). They like a drink a wee bit moe than the later ones, if you manage to average 30 mpg you arent enjoying it hard enough

My parents somehow manage to average low-30s mpg out of their '05 one! They're both retired though, so that should be enough to describe their driving style...

Like I said in my first post, it's their one that made me like Legacies, and I can't help but think a non-outback (so lower) would handle even better.

UPDATE:

Mr Lacquer Peel of this parish kindly contacted the seller today (I'll probably phone them this evening and explain more, I feel a bit silly now).

Anyway, the seller is not available for viewings until Saturday but is very pleasant, and Lacquer Peel is not going to be in the area near the car on Saturday.

Volunteers, or do I just get the seller to email me more photos then go and collect it on Saturday anyway? :D

Me being available to go and see it for you kinda depends on how much work my own car needs at the garage tomorrow when it goes in and whether I have it back for the weekend or whether it ends up being in till next week due to parts availability etc

If I have it back before Saturday and nobody else has volunteered to do it by then and you havent decided the "fuck it" option of just going down and collecting yourself, Id be more than willing to check it over for you.

Sorry I've only just seen this but I'm in Ardrossan and run a Legacy twin turbo as a daily drive. You seriously want one of those, they handle like nothing else on earth and are going up in value. You can have a go of mine if you'd like? I can get 30 mpg out of my manual, auto a little less. If you need anything else looking at down this way, feel free to PM me. I'm not online every day but do check my emails on my phone.

I had a '97 auto Leggy for a while. I suspect they handle better than the manual..

Manuals have a 50/50 torque split, autos were 60/40 rear at that age (no idea why mind).

I do still like the idea of a Legacy, yeah.

Not sure on the twin turbo though, as they're all a bit out of my price range because JDM performance car YO! tax.

I'm not in Ayrshire very often. :D

I've never paid more than a grand for a twin turbo, altho all of mine have Gen 2 models. Gen 3 like the shape of car you were looking at, yeah will be a couple of grand for a half decent one. Insurance isn't as bad as you might think but you either need to go to a specialist broker, or for some bizarre reason, anyone underwritten by a certain underwriter, I forget the name but Churchill, Direct Line, Priviledge all use the same one and all are half the price of the specialists. Excess is higher but you do save that amount on the cost of the insurance in first place.\

I work in Glasgow so am back and forwards if you ever want a drive. My manual is off the road for a clutch atm but my auto is my daily drive and the other half prefers it to my manual coz he can keep both hands on the wheel....

EDIT - forgot to say, on the twin turbos, manuals have a fixed 60/40 torque split bias to the rear, the autos are set up like that too but because of some electronic trickey in the box, they have variable torque split and can send power to where ever has grip. You can also make the 2wd if you really want to. They are apparently better in winter than the manuals and the one bad winter I had with a 2.2 auto saloon in about 6-8 inches of snow on summer tyres, I was seriously impressed.
