Agree that prices are on the up though, but a lot of that seems to be speculative chancers thinking they are sat on a goldmine. £500 would still buy a good example.A lot of old Pug's that age are on the rise, and rapidly, I've seen a couple of 205's now go for over 15k, one wasn't even that great. I've just watched a 405 that's been laid up for years and not even running just this week on ebay go for nearly £5k...and there's another one at £2,500+ now with no MOT.... In fact, I thought I still had it insured - but it turns out I flipped this policy into my W202 - not the other policy. Which means I still have a Lolvo 240 insured that I sold in the summer. Ooops. The fuel needle is almost certainly the float stuck. The dude I bought the car from was very, very honest - a true gentleman. He had a new fuel pump installed and, after that, it never worked. Apparently (although I'm no expert) they had to crack open the fuel tank during the process - and since then, it's been dead. Wish I could justify it back. But something would have to go first, and I like them all at the moment.GLWS dude.Cheers mate. I'll whip the pump out at the weekend and check the float. Could be a nice cheap fix. The 306 cab went to its new home in Wales but not before I had travelled to Hinckley to pick up this beaut: No epic collection adventure or anything, we were there and back within 3 hours, didnt even need a fill up because there was a 1/4 of a tank in it. Its a 1.4 XL, first impressions are positive (other than the lack of power), its been well looked after and the bodywork is dead clean, just needs a couple of bits for the MoT, which is in 2 weeks... 1: New windscreen2: Light clonk from the front sorting, need to take a closer look at that. Its got a few electrical gremlins too, central locking unlocks itself (I've unplugged the control module for now), leccy front windows intermittantly stop working. Nothing major tho. As long as the mot doesnt throw up anything major, I'll be happy. Hoping to keep this cheap as it was only £150, obvs the screen is going to fuck with that a bit, but I'm going to ignore that. I nearly bought an early 306 last weekend but the strongish asking price and low mileage in the past decade put me off. Good luck with it! I hate doing this but if you ever do want to sell I might have room for it. Equally now might be the time to hide away an early 306. AlsoMike Posted January 14, 2018 Author Share Posted January 14, 2018 MoT was finally acheived on the 306 this week, new screen was fitted, i changed a track rod end, fiddled with the headlamps and got the reluctant rear door handle working again. Todays job was cleaning the inside, it no longer stinks of dog and the controls are slightly less grim. In celebration I took a photo of its blandness. 13" wheels look tiny on this. This time it’ll be the other marques, the in-between-Peugeot moments. There’s a lot of variation, but not in quality, which is all fairly consistently low. I’ll start at the start which seems as good a place as any. It’s late 2004 and I’ve just started my first job out of university. I need transport for this new job asap and luckily my new co-worker has just the thing, a 1995 Renault 5 Campus. In pink.This is not a photo of the actual car unfortunately, no great loss tho. It was shit. This little beaut rattled along for a few months being utterly terrible in every way before it blew the headgasket in spectacular fashion on the M180 outside Scunthorpe. This caused the engine to seize as I was so pissed off I refused to stop straight away. Ooops. This minor setback wasn’t too bad, because I had already secured the 5’s replacement. A 1989 MG Maestro. This was actually a pretty decent car, it was great to drive, but it was rusty as feck. You could put your hands through the holes in the boot and the arches were mostly fibreglass and filler by the time I’d finished with it. (Not a proud moment) In the end it had to go because I had bought 2 other cars and it turned out I couldn’t afford all 3… I'd have another but the prices have gone out of my range now. Not long after I bought the Maestro I was offered this 1982 Golf Mk1: (Impressively shit photos at this point – I'd borrowed a 1/2 megapixel camera) The Golf sported a 1.3 engine and 5 speed box from a later Polo, a GTi interior and the flattest paint evar. It was a hoot though, when it ran properly, which wasn’t very often. Camera upgrade: I sold it to a lass that lived down the road and it’s been off the road ever since, this would be 2006 I think. The other fine vehicular choice I’d made at this time was another Renault 5, this time in 1985 TL flavour. This, I think, has the distinction of being the most rotten MoT’d car I ever owned. (Back to the potato camera for these ones) It cost me £150, had 6 months MoT and the first time I jacked it up the sill gave way. It ran like a sewing machine tho. Sold it to a local lad for £175 after using it for 2 months. I think this is where my first Peugeot came in. So I had a few beers and went on ebay, which is how all the best choices are made. This I what I won: 1981 Vauxhall Astra 1200s, saloon. Beige with beige interior, 55k on the clocks. Turns out the seller was a certain P.G. Weasel, formerly of this shire. It wasn’t a bad old bus actually, I threw some choice* mods at it along the way. Beige Astra (Mk1 Cavalier alloys + fablon..) In the end I got itchy feet and put it all back to standard and sold it on for far too little. It was scrapped not long after I sold it unfortunately. I think I had another Peugeot here somewhere, probably that pink 205 Auto. Anyhoo, I got back on ebay and scouted around for something different. PICT0039-1 1988 Hyundai Pony 1.5. This had done about 33k miles and looked really tidy. It was a terrible car, and not in an endearing way, it was slow and wobbly and every single thing underneath was rusted solid. I painted the wheels orange, don’t judge. Or do, but keep it to yourself. I parked it next to an SD1 diesel. Image020 I only owned the Pony and Trap for 3 months and sold it to a very grumpy bloke who told me “it better not break down on the way home”. It cost him £175. Arse.Until this point I had never spent more than £400 on a car and felt like it wasn’t getting me anywhere, so I got some cash together and splurged a bit more on the next victim. PICT0072-1 1983 Vw Golf GX. Standard bar the red grill trim and wheels, this was actually not a bad motor. It had been well-ish looked after and drove well. It did eat a CV joint on the way home from picking it up though. I actually went to the trouble of polishing the darn thing. It got coilovers, wheels etc. I camped in it at VW Action in 2008 because I forgot my tent poles. PICT0196 It ended up looking like this, I was pretty happy with it. I replaced the wings, bumper and various bits of trim to tidy it up. 110709c Then I got made redundant, couldn’t find work for aaages and had to sell it. I was gutted. Made a loss on it and wished I’d kept hold of it. It’s still around, a later owner has restored it properly now. Next up, more VW, more faded pinkness. 06022011071 1989 Golf, 1.3 4 speed. Note the gaffer tape on the door, quality. Top marks to VW for the Mk2, it was solid and well built and comfortable. The 1.3 was much too weak for it though, I would imagine a bigger engined version is a great steer. I tidied it somewhat: 2011-03-26 17.20.01 As you can imagine with it being Tornado red ( I think) it was pink again minutes after this polish/wax session. When the MoT was up I had lost enthusiasm for it, it was just too damn slow. So I sold it, and quite predicatbly bought a Peugeot 205. The 205 lasted a short amount of time due to the introduction of a big commute for my first teaching job in 2011. I'm adverse to getting anything truly sensible, so I bought a Rover. 2012-08-07142913 1998 Rover 200 SDi. This was a brill car, low miles and perky performance. I'm now a big fan of the L-Series diesel, loud and clanky, but nice and pokey and good on fuel. 2012-08-07142929 This got sold to someone on here I think, good motor, I hope its soldiering on somewhere. You can actually see my blue 106 on the background of this photo, I like a bit of overlap between motors. I also had this 1981 Audi 80 at some point here, can't remember exactly when I bought it. 1.6 auto and springs cut down to about 1.5 coils. 2012-04-07154145 In this photo the Audi is broken down because it popped a core plug the first time I drove it. The car used to belong to John 'donttellhimpike' from the Blue forum. They had been assured that it was a good'un, but it turned out to be hellish rusty underneath. I didn't realise this, and sold it to Dez (also from the blue forum) who found the horrors once he got it home. Needless to say I felt pretty frikkin bad, but he had the skills to fix and got it back on the road. I liked how it looked on the P6 trims, even if it broke my spine. 2012-05-20161043 It was a quality* motor. At some point in 2012 I bought this Saxo VTR. Saxo VTR I'm not entirely sure why I got it. It has no MoT, it was stripped out inside and had an exhaust you could fit your head it. I took it for an MoT and the fail list went on to a separate sheet. Cant remember the reg or I'd check it online. I parked it up for a couple of months and then sold it to a racer from scunthorpe and got my money back. Pretty pointless exercise really. Not sure why I keep doing shit like that. Right, what's next... Oh yeah, haha. 20160416_111722_zpsrgfykfty I spent a whopping £132 on this Rover 25 TD. It had 6 months Mot on it I think, and the PO was getting rid because someone had GIVEN them a 7 year old Merc A Class. It was rusty, smelly and didnt run right. I disconnected the MAF and replaced a turbo hose and performance was mostly restored. It never felt as quick as the SDi though. Probably because it was higher miles and more ruined. _57_2 I gave this away when the MoT was nearly up. I think this was next up: 2015-09-05 16.47.44 1999 Toyota Corolla 1.3. The dullest car ever built. It gave me motion sickness to drive it for some reason, despite me never suffering before. I disliked this car intensely after about a week of owning it. It wasn't bad, but it did nothing really well. Performance was mediocre, comfort was middling, MPG ok-ish. Dull, dull, dull, dull, dull. 2015-09-05 16.48.28 Bland. It would spin the N/S tyre if you tried to pull away quickly, the speedo read 15 mph out ALL THE TIME and it clonked over bumps despite me replacing everything conceivable on the front end. Shitty car. Sold to an exporter when the MoT ran out. And that brings us pretty much up to date! Other vehicles in the fold currently are the Mrs' Picanto (in the background of the above photo) which is an excellent car and needs minimal attention despite constant abuse, and our VW T4 camper which we spent last summer fitting out ourselves. 20170716_112056 I built the interior from scratch over many many weekends, fitted electrics and whatnot. Its turned out to be really useable. I'm determined to keep this looking as standard as possible on the outside, it'll get a few interior tweaks over the winter and then hopefully will get some serious use this coming year. MiL let her cats shit in it, smoked in it, ate in it, and curbed it really badly - to the point the sills needed welding for the next MOT because of physical damage. When we got so fed up of driving to Coventry and paying for shit hotels to sort her shit out she moved up to the North East and she took a scrappage scheme offer for a 12 month unlimited all-north-east bus and rail pass, which she used precisely once. The 306 sold locally for not much money to a chap who was giving it to his son, so hopefully its still on the road somewhere. The T4 was used for camping this summer and got treated to a set of 16" Merc steel wheels with new Conti's (ebay bargain at £120) to replace the ancient tyres that were on it, drives so much better (and probably safer!) now. Doesnt exactly look much different though. 20180815_122702 The red 205 is still here, but not sure for how much longer to be honest. I'm not driving it as much any more because of a new and lengthy commute for work so its just been sat. When i have driven it recently it hasn't put the same smile on my face that it used to, so I'm tempted to move it on. I brought appropriate lubrication (and consequently think the following is far more interesting than it likely is): 20181109_194918 Those heaps are all Kymco Agility 125s, or rather they were before the users of Melton Mowbray's Ride2Werk scheme got hold of them. After 3 years of thrashing they have probably seen better days, but I'm hoping something rideable can be made from them. The most complete looking one apparently has a knackered engine, and the third one looks to have had a bit of a smash at the front, so I'm going to make 1 good one out of the two. So I stripped No.3 completely. 20181109_194909 And took the 'knackered' engine out of No.1 - someone had been here before me and just taken loads of random shit off. Looks like its been disabled rather than broken. Oh well. 20181109_204641 Both together, I'm hoping the one on the left runs... 20181109_194934 It took me longer to get the bastard plastic covers off everything than it did to actually fit the fucking engine. The mechanicals look pretty simple, but whoever designed the bodywork is a swine. The screws, well those that are left, are all made of chocolate as well.
