SOLD TDR 125 £650 Hertfordshire - 12 months MOT ideal winter hack etc...

Now, no fighting over this please, I know it's both ultra desirable* and a bargain* at my ebay fuelled over estimate of it's worth.

Do you fancy learning to ride a motorbike but don't fancy looking like giraffe riding a pony?

Do you have space for a second bike and long for the nostalgic world of 2 stroke but without the premium of the letters RD?

Do you fancy a small CC bimble machine that can comfortably sit at a real world 60mph?

Then today is your lucky day.

It's a French import, that I have converted, Speedo shows MPH, UK headlight installed not just taped to get through the MOT. It has just under 50k (km) on the clocks, with no way of verifying that at all.

There is a thread on the getting it an MOT / registering it below. It has done several hundred miles on a long commute to and from work since the running issues, so that side of it is better than the thread suggests.

PROS:

Always starts 1st time now, I'd genuinely have no issues riding this anywhere.

Gearbox is nice and smooth.

New tyres fitted a few months ago with years left given the power of the bike (they were mainly changed due to old tyres being over 10 years old).

Massively comfortable, I did a 5 hour day on it as my first proper ride and got off without aches, the same can't be said of the CB650 I did my training on...

MOT till December

CONS:

Fork seal misting advisory that I've never dealt with, it really doesn't seem an issue to me at this moment in time but leaks don't fix themselves so it will need doing at some point. It also has advisories for a notchy headset bearing / bent handlebars but I'd be a liar if I said I could tell. You may well be more zen whilst riding and notice.

Back brake pedal has more travel than a gap yaaaaar student.

Front pads are low, new ones will come with the bike for the new competent owner to fit.  New pads now fitted

It's a bit tatty, seat has the odd rip, scratches on the plastic, one part of the fairing is ziptied on as the recessed bolt holder thing fell through. Tad bit of rust on the handlebar etc.... At some point tomorrow I'll try and take some photos showing the worst bits. It's not concourse, just a proper 'well loved' bike.

http://autoshite.com/topic/25954-deux-temps-goodness-non-car-content/

It's hard to value as there aren't many around, there's an unregistered import with no Carb for 900 quid on ebay and that's about it. As a Japanese manufactured 2 stroke learner legal bike that isn't a complete project I'd be aiming to see how close to a grand I could get through the usual channels, so I'm going to guess at £650 as a shiters price.

OR

The reason it is off to pastures new is that I've just passed my test and therefore 'need' a big bike, but have explicitly been informed there is no chance of me being allowed to keep it and buy a new bike (and apparently I can't just flog a push bike as apparently they aren't equivalent...)

So, does anyone fancy a swap with appropriate money involved? I change my mind daily on what big bike I fancy, so if there's anything anyone isn't riding any more let me know!

How easy would it be to de-restrict it? I'm thinking the Italian versions of the RD125LC produced 28 BHP instead of  our12, and it must be the same basic engine ?

I looked into this when I had a DT 125LC & I think it involved fitting a Power Valve system,so probably not that easy  :?

It definitely has a working power valve. Being a French import I don't know how restricted it actually is.

Being the world's worst biker I've never actually found out it's top speed, I've had 70 on a GPS log but you are looking at quite far up the rev range by then. I belive they are geared like the DTRs rather than the' road' bikes with the same engines so 6th isn't particularly long.

Swap for well rank Bandit 600?

How rank is the rank Bandit? A bandit wouldn't have been my first choice but at the same time I can't really tell you why, it'd be more than quick enough as a first big bike, is it the rarer faired version by any chance? So I am open to being sold on the idea! I remember you mentioning it but autoshite and search are words that don't go massively well together. I'll try and dig out the bits you've put about it, presumably in the bikeshite thread?

Tempting- I'd love to try commuting on something like this, in order to squeeze as much fun as possible out of my A1 licence, but I'm trying to be sensible having just bought something...

What did you just buy? It would be bloody ideal for an A1 licence, something enjoyable to ride (possible bias here). , nice and comfy for long distance and a talking point with other bikers as they reminisce about how great 2 strokes are.

To be honest the bandit would be a poor deal for you, and it's still not running / on the road with little prospect of me sorting it out in the next few weeks.

I posted the offer without really thinking.

Really you should try and advertise this somewhere else for £1495, as you say people are mad for 2 strokes at the moment and I think you're perhaps selling it a bit short.

Tbh it is a bit cheap. Derestriction (if it was restricted) is a simple matter of turning the power valve until it gets to the fully open position. Occasionally on some bikes there would also be a restrictor in the exhaust which needed removing, you could see in looking in the front pipe

I used to use a decompressor lever on the bars to give control without a power valve computer. Most people just left them set wide open, they aren't bad to ride like that.

Cheers, I did find your bandit, I'm really after something that I can try and squeeze the last few days of summer out of and ideally with a fairing for trying to ride a bit into the start of winter . I do really need to look into the best way to sell it, due to it being sold in such small numbers here it'll never attract the nostalgia crowd, especially adding to the fact that it really is a well loved* example. Someone with a few days and some mechanical know how could smarten it up and I'd never begrudge them that, I do think 800 is probably reflective of it in it's current condition for someone on here.

My issue is that I do really want a big bike, and am in the position to buy / insure one atm which due to personal circumstances may not be the case in 6 months. So feel I should go for something I really fancy now. If I had storage space it'd be fine in terms of trying to maximise what I could get out of it as it wouldn't be stopping me getting something else. That being said if I had storage I'd keep it as a summer bimbling bike.

So presuming they haven't been sold, I'm off to London for lunch later and am breaking my journey at a dealer that has early 2000s examples of an R6 and a Thundercat, hopefully I'll be able to blag sitting on them to convince myself that an R6 would be far too small no matter my ideals but hopefully the cat will fit. I haven't got my licence back from the DVLA yet so even if they allowed new riders I can't test ride anything so annoying them by sitting on bikes seems like the next best thing.

Pretty sure the rule is that if you've passed your test you can ride while waiting for your licence to be done.

If you're worried you could try https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence if you know your licence number, it may be showing electronically already.

Good luck, Thundercats are fairly big compared to a modern RR type 600, should be much comfier and better value as all the cool kidz want the R6.

If it's a French market bike, doesn't that mean it's not restricted by definition?

Used to be the case with older 125's - Europe got the full power affairs whereas UK got the 12bhp ones.  Don't know if this is out of date info.

Derestricting RD's & DT's used to be quite easy but doing it properly (powervalve controller etc) was a couple of hundred quid years ago. Don't know if this applies to TDR's as never ridden or worked on a TDR125 (have ridden the 250 - great bikes).

Licence wise, I know I'm sound to ride but whenever I've test driven any car at a dealer I've had to show / hand over my license so I imagine bike places would raise an eyebrow over being told it's 'in the post'

ZZR600s are well up on my list, especially if green! There don't seem to be masses of them about certainly none in any dealers nearish and as I'm currently just showrooming ideas (unless I get too keen...) I wouldn't waste the time of a private seller to just sit on it.

RF600s I wouldn't discount one but wouldn't seek out if that makes sense. Possibly like the zzrs were used as winter hacks so less have survived and they didn't sell as many to start with?

A Cbr 600 definitely tickles my fancy! I'm all ears for any plans, especially one that involves getting someone else on two wheels! Do you mind digging about with him for a little info?

I honestly wouldn't like to say, googling derestricing them comes up with different bits from changing exhaust to cutting a wire (which isn't there on mine).

I think the full power ones were 'only' about 20hp,not the full on Italian 30 that some 125s were making, giving a useful amount of power without constant rebuilds.

I had a RF600 after my test. There wasn't much legroom as the seat is lower than the 900, fine for shorter blasts but uncomfy for distances. I still put 20k on it in 8 months though.

Anyway restrictions, just remembered a German market dt125r taken as a part exchange - came complete with all the power valve computer and operating gear - definitely made more power than a restricted uk model, but nowhere near as quick as my thoroughly abused tweeked messed with and derestricted uk DT.

I think that might have been something in the front pipe or the CDI.

As an owner of a 1999 R6 (5EB designation).  dont buy one.  seriously.  they suffer from second gear issues and the liners crack for fun meaning an uneconomical repair bill, or a bike shaped paperweight.

I have one, and I love it, but it could let go at any minute.  i absolutely would NOT buy another, despite how much i love it.

for reference - any carbed R6 is a no go.  i'd rather have the thundercat for reliability.  hell, i'd rather have an Aprilia for the reliability lol

if you do facebook, look for the R6 5EB owners club, and the R6 owners club.  they'll echo my sentiments.  amazing bikes, not worth the gamble.

if you really must buy one, check starting when hot (it'll struggle if the liners have gone) and even ask for a compression test.  they'll know you know your stuff then.  also, give it the beans in second, but be ready for it to pop out into neutral at higher revs.  if it does, walk away.

other similar contenders - ZX6R 99 on are pretty good ( i have one im doing up) and CBR600.

good luck with the first big bike :-)

A mate had a carbed R6 a few years ago, it got to Morocco ok & even got thrown down African roads in snow twice on the trip...

Unfortunately not, unless Catsinthewelder / his boss are still interested?

It's certainly looks like it'll be easier buying a bike rather than selling one. After learning I'd passed my yesterday morning I got a text from a colleague at work who had been in touch with a friend who runs a bike shop telling me they had a lovely VRF750 that was right up my street apparently. Given nothing is likely to happen this weekend I'm down in Cornwall camping for 10 days from next week the serious searching will have to start then.

SV650s' are well on my radar, few people have a bad word to say about them and there are so many for good prices you can be a bit picky. The 60k one I'd wander straight past it was nowhere as clean in real life, given it wasn't cheap I'd pass on that one.

My main take back from my trip to poke at an R6 and Thundercat was how much of a shithole Barnet now is, I'm sure it wasn't that grim in the not too distant past. On the bike front I could really see myself owning the Cat, given some half baked plans for possible longer distance rides I think the R6 would make me cry. Given they have the same basic engine I presume the Thundercats have the same 2nd gear issue?
