Electric Railway Museum LAST EVER OPEN DAY!!! Sunday 8th October. A Scotoshite and Midlands Massiv Joint Event.

So I left the pub about 8 last night. By 8:30 the alternator light was on. Just as I was going along the M5. So a hasty pull over in to Frankley services was made and a quick phonecall to FPB7. I knew he wasn't far away. I did some poking about but it wasn't until he arrived with a meter we deduced the brushes were gone on the alternator.

A quick trip up the road to Oldbury and a night at the Premier Inn seemed like the order of business.

In the morning I did a google and some phoning about. GSF car parts said they could have an alternator in stock for 12. Mr FPB7 appeared at 10 so we could take the old alternator off and go for breakfast in Europe's 3rd largest Tesco. Apparently. After brekkie we did a shop browse. I noticed then bought a bluetooth speaker - radio code is in the house. Battery disconnected etc. Off to GSF we did a tour of the 87 bus route, visited the Oldbury Saver Centre (Sainsburys) because grim and swung past Fuzz Towsend's garage. Just because.

Picked up the alt at GSF no bother. Long bolt in the tensioner snapped so we had to find a garage to extract the remaining threads then to Lister's to spend 44p on a new bolt. Back to the car park, fitted and it worked. Happiness. Get the bluetooth speaker working, fuel at the end of the road then on the M5 for 1345. M6 north closed at Preston so Tebay achieved approx 1730. Only 21:30hrs since leaving Alvechurch and I've made it to almost Cumbria. Eta home... 2045

This was a top day out. The sun was out for much of the day and some shiny and many not-so-shiny things were seen. I may post some pics in a bit.

Commiserations to all that got caught in stoopid M6 closure shenanigans and the associated northbound delays on their journeys home, breakdowns notwithstanding!

Good to meet everyone, and indeed, a big thanks to all those that organised it.

Oh and don't forget the Volvo's tape deck decided to stop working yesterday between the train museum and Wythall. It still plays music but faster than usual and it just unspools the tape in to the internals of the machine so I suspect a belt has snapped that drives one of the pinions that turns the reel inside the casette. And it doesn't reverse any more either.

That was a fantastic day out, big thanks to everyone for making it happen.

I looked through my photographs of the Electric Railway Museum and I've accidentally made it look like I was wandering around a 28 Days Later style apocolypse-scape.

Stop messing with that.

Then, befitting of a day full of Volvos, I got to drive Ghosty's 740 back to Manchester. Which was great, as I've never driven a Volvo before.

I enjoyed this tremendously. It was great to meet so many from the AS community and of course throughout the day there were lots of nice old cars, trains, buses, milk floats (OK I didn't see as many as some) and even a few canals and nice buildings to admire along the way.

Here are some of my memories of the day - this is Part 1 - at the ERM itself

Part 2...

A fantastic array of Birmingham City Transport buses awaited our arrival

This is one of the two milkfloats I did find - I missed the other 30+!

There were trains!

post-22262-0-02022500-1507651821_thumb.jpg

There were canals too. This is the River Cole Aqueduct on the Stratford Canal, as observed from the front seat of a 1950 Bristol L5G in Crosville livery.

post-22262-0-31739900-1507651819_thumb.jpg

We toured around on these lovely buses and saw some great old buildings, including the former Church of St Mary, built in 1862 and closed in 1986. There was another random Volvo 740 in the car park there, this time a white one from around 1987.

We passed the old Maypole Textile Works several times!

The old BCT Yardley Wood Bus Depot is still in use

post-22262-0-54629900-1507651825_thumb.jpg

The shiniest bus of the day was this 1950 Guy Arab in Birmingham City Transport livery:

post-22262-0-57043400-1507651824_thumb.jpg

Its moquette featured representations of the 1950s Birmingham factory skyline reflected in the local canals and the rows of trees that lined the streets, back in the day

post-22262-0-92701600-1507651822_thumb.jpg

After all of that, a good dinner, good company and good conversation were enjoyed before everyone disappeared off to their various destinations. Having people depart for England, Wales and Scotland was interesting, even if the latter took a while to achieve. Hope it is fixed now!

Thanks for a great day.

Not yet, but Volvo is repaired and on the way north again. Thought Volvos were reliable...

They are so reliable they wear out things that don't normally wear out. Namely in my case the fuel pump relay the other week and the alternator brushes this time round.
