Popular Post dougiefourspeed
Hello. I'm Doug, long-time lurker and first time sitting-down-at-computer-and-actually-bothering-to-post-er. Part of this is due to the fact that I have recently acquired some shite that you may (but probably will not) be interested in. Before I launch into the main event, a quick bit of background. I'm not exactly new to shite having previously suffered from such afflictions as 954cc Citroen AX DIMENSION and an '84 Honda Prelude amongst others. But the last couple of years has involved couple of modern(ish) vehicles of the SPURTY type - I'm a tart at heart, you see. Anyway, decided that it would be great fun to experience the double-whammy rollercoaster ride of moving house and changing jobs at pretty much the same time. I was rolling at that point in an increasingly tatty E46 325. My commute was now going to be much longer so fuel cost was a consideration and I just got the feeling the 325 was on the verge of money pit territory, with all the common M54 faults starting to manifest. So I binned it off cheap through a well-known online auction site. Nice car, but a bit complex for my tastes. The lucky* winner of the E46 rocked up at about 11AM on a Sunday to collect it. He had come down from Bow, London to my place in Deathcamp-on-sea East Sussex and pitched up in a VW Caddy van and about five(!) other geezers (Minty from Eastenders, is that you?) climbed out of the back which I have to admit caused a slight smidgen of doubt in my mind that I had perhaps chosen the wrong method of sale. But needless to say I shouldn't have judged books by their covers or even their considerable amount of neck rolls. They were all friendly enough and ponied up the cash with a minimal amount of rhyming slang and stabbing and I even got a text later in the day to say they'd got back and loved the car. It'll probably be in a Stormzy video soon or something. The net result of this was that I had £575 in hand and due to typically excellent forward planning on my part I had to find a new car in ONE afternoon because I had work the following morning. It was a bit like an episode Challenge Anneka except with less running, more browsing Gumtree and (a bit) less masturbating on my part. I didn't really want to blow my entire WAD on a new winners chariot because my new house is shafting me at the moment and I wanted to treat my other half - by way of me going to the pub and not coming back for three days. Anywhat, for those that are still with me after that ramble I did find a car that afternoon and here it is! OH YES. It's an S1 Pug 106, a high watermark (skidmark?) in itself but its also the ultra-desirable AZTEC special edition. According to the super accurate* How Many Left website there are just 121 of these pussy magnets left taxed on UK roads, making it even more scarce and therefore surely more valuable than the much-vaunted Rallye model. Let's take a closer look at this RAREAND ATTRACTIVE vehicle and check out the FEATURZ. Three incorrect wheel trims from a much later car? YES Leaking sunroof repaired in accordance with the official Peugeot workshop manual instructions? NATURELLEMENT. Boot full of assorted junk including spare wheel and tyre dated from the year 2000 and two sexy original 'Pulsar' wheel trims that are of course frustratingly broken? YOU KNOWS IT BOSS. No rust on the boot floor mind you. This is probably the worst bit of the car. It's clearly had a slight knock and the indicator is a bit pissed but fixed firmly in place still. So, is there anything good about this car I hear you ask? Well actually yes. Pretty much everything else.. REGARDEZ ICI. Here's the UNIT. It's allegedly an 1124cc TU1. I don't know if it's been touched inappropriately in the past but it feels bloody lively for what it is. I was expecting it to feel dog slow after the 325 but its really sweet zippy little thing. Short gearing helps here but its really nippy through 2nd and 3rd. I've driven S2 106 1.1's loads and they didn't feel as eager. Were S2's strangled by Euro emission shit perhaps? To be honest I have pretty much zero history for this car, so I guess its feasible someone could have dropped in a 1400 or something in the past and not changed it on the V5 (unlikely) but these early TU's all seem visually the same to me. If anyone can confirm that'd be nice? Whatever, its as smooth as you like and makes an amusing rorty sound when you boot it which reminds me of an old school Downton Mini or something except without the shit transmission whine. Also I know there's meant to be a pipe at the front there but they seem to disintegrate within about two years on all the 106's I've ever known. Issues in here include a slight amount of mayo in the expansion tank - suspect previous short journeys are cause rather than HGF as coolant level holding firm after 1k miles. It was low on purchase but hasn't used any after being topped up. Also I have got a replacement dipstick on order as it was ERRANT. Rust free inner wings too (I've been burned before - see Citroen AX). The interior is surprisingly free of blood and piss etc. It's actually pretty comfy and I don't think a long drive would be an issue in here. Everything works apart from the posh Sony AM/FM/DAB/KFC/OBE/J-LO head unit won't play in radio mode. CD and Aux in are both fine and the roof aerial is present and correct so not sure whats up here, a break in the wiring behind the dash maybe? Sooner or later I'll have a fiddle and after that I'll see why the radio doesn't work. LOLOLOL etc. LOW ASS MILES. Look to be genuine according to the MOT history, but more important than this is that despite having the traditional erratic fuel gauge that will indicate fuel level based on cornering/incline/GDP of the Central African Republic but never on the actual amount of fuel remaning, the SPAZTEC has returned an average of 49.55 MPGS over 1068 miles! Which is really why I bought it in the first place (that and because I couldn't find a Rover R8 for sale nearby at the time). I should also mention the purchase price which was £295 which is probably about 14 euros nowadays for those reading overseas. I don't know how much updating this thread will get, largely because the Spaztec seems to be a reliable little sort. To be honest I was going to just run it until its out of ticket in December and buy something else then but over the last six weeks I've become really fond of the little thing. I'm even thinking about replacing the knackered front wing. Other future plans include sorting out the non-functioning radio and reinstating a full set of 13" Pulsar wheel trims so I get an invite to Pebble Beach next year. Oh and I've also ordered a new tyre to replace the NSF which is quite low - £20 delivered BARG. I'm toying with the idea of losing the decals as they're in a pretty sorry state, what do you lot reckon? That's quite enough of my shit for now. Ta for reading etc etc. privatewire, Coprolalia, FakeConcern and 47 others

Hendry
Excellent first post mate! Genuinely made me laugh a few times. Nice wee cars the 106s, I cant say im a Pug lover after having a 206 that I utterly despised, anytime I see even a late 106 I think "where the fuck did it all go wrong Peugeot, you had a brilliant range of cars in the 106/306/406 and managed to royally screw it up" That said my aunt and her ex boyfriend both had 106s and they were cracking wee things, very basic for my tastes but cracking all the same. K plate green 1.0 XN Graduate and an R plate S2 1.1 XN. They both liked to eat exhausts but other than that troublefree. As for the decals, id say keep them, but im just OCD so feel free to ignore that suggestion.

DSdriver
The fuel gauge on the 106, as part of the deal when Peugeot and Citroen amalgamated, had to be taken from the original Citroen DS parts bin. unclecalzone
If you've got oil in the cooling system it'll most likely have a slight oil to water head gasket leak. I'd wager it's also weeping from the gasket above the alternator as they all do before the swapped to better gaskets on the much later s2 cars. Can get worse but in my experience it doesn't seem to rapidly go to shit, just the odd glob of oil appearing every so often with no other ill effects but still worth a flush to get the oil out so it doesn't kill any rubber coolant pipework. dougiefourspeed and somewhatfoolish

dougiefourspeed
Blimey, who would have ever thought that the half-cut witterings of a card carrying mental about a bog-spec French shopping car could garner so much positive interest! But I'm glad the little spaztec has found some fans. Welcome in dude. Nice introducing. You are obviously a gentleman of unpeckable taste. It was actually stumbling upon your 106 dizzler thread whilst Googling photos of red underpants at work that inspired me to join up Mr DoubleWilson, so cheers for that innit. Welcome along to the AS "poster" club A 106 GTi is something I've always fancied in the 106 flavour. GTi's are already going for ALL ZE MONNAIE. Seems as though you're doing well these days if you pay less than £2k for one that isn't totally fucked. The fuel gauge on the 106, as part of the deal when Peugeot and Citroen amalgamated, had to be taken from the original Citroen DS parts bin. That is why it is as accurate as this statement.Oh, and welcome aboard. Cor! You learn something new every day. Although I'm a bit disappointed to find out that Citroen, being at their zenith, didn't equip the DS fuel gauge with some sort of gyroscopic self-levelling for exactly this reason. QUELLE MALHEUREUSEMENT! Something about an R8? I have one for sale but it's nowhere near as economical. I love R8's (and pretty much all Rover/BL chod) Ghosty, but I only have room for one item of shite right now - although I'm working on that front... If you've got oil in the cooling system it'll most likely have a slight oil to water head gasket leak. I'd wager it's also weeping from the gasket above the alternator as they all do before the swapped to better gaskets on the much later s2 cars. Thanks for the info on that Uncle Cal, my current thinking is, expansion tank off > clean gloop out > tank back on > coolant system flush > new coolant > run for a bit and see if mayo returns.I've a theory you do sometimes get a bit of oil in the water on these TU's and its not necessarily the end of the world. Welcome aboard squire. I've currently got this in my watch list. I think it's pissibly the rarest car in the whole of the middle east. Cheers Rod/b/ney. Get that bought! They're ace. Rave
Welcome mate. I've got the ex-WW 1.5D now and I love it. A few years ago I had a black S1 Rallye for a while, I bought it at an auction with 54,000 miles, paint by Stevie Wonder and a fairly thick wad of history. Browsing through it revealed that it had had no fewer than 3- 3!- replacement head gaskets before I got it. I don't know if it was a friday afternoon job, or what, it didn't require another in the short time I had it. Long story, but I lent it to a friend for a while and then ended up selling it to him after he fell head over heels in love with it; he then spent two grand on a bare metal respray for it, and AFAIK still has it, though last time I checked it was SORNed, I should try and catch up with him and see how it's doing. The 1.5D seems just as nippy in normal driving; it just doesn't scream round to 7500rpm like the Rallye did if you kept it planted. I'm getting more like 60mpg from a mix of town and a-road driving...
