They're a kit in Japan, there's also less-popular (but much better looking) 70s American van style fronts. Subaru made a "Classic" version of the Atrai with round headlights like that and lots of plastic chrome. I believe the kits are just an adaptated version of that front-end and that you can get the kits as standalone or buy one already made up like that. I would guess there are bodyshops there that specialize in "making" them too. What is funny is that the vans themselves are relatively worthless and ten-a-penny in Japan. A 1991 Sambar in Japan would probably be given away for free without the bodykit on and all the supposedly mad stuff like aircon, 4WD, turbos etc. are pretty commonplace features. I would bet that they got it for something like £500, even then only because someone might have wanted the bodykit to put on a newer one.I'd love to be one of the people who arranges stuff like this to be imported, sounds like not a great deal of work for big profit if you know what you are doing! There is a similar thing happening with Daihatsu Midget IIs, random kei-cars and Nissan Figaros (though the Figaros are worth a bit more than the rest). Doesn't matter if it cost them barely more than the costs for shipping/registering it here, as 90% of the punters don't know that!

Here's a later take on a similar concept to the Commer. My dad drove one of these for a bit, it was truly awful.
Again, to be driven whilst in "Mr Twit" outfit of bad wooly pully, roll-up, unkempt beard and hair.
Actually, a look that my father is quite partial to.

Oops, just seen the ad. So it is a camper, but it'd be easy to convert back to a panel van. Two and a half grand is a little over the top though.

Shit the bed!

Posted Image

It was recently inspected by Andrew Thorogood Restorations for the purposes of recommissioning the car. Over a 3 hour test it was discovered that there were no major mechanical issues that would prevent the car being roadworthy. The structural issues are that the front off-side suspension strut is corroded as is the nearside rear floor pan.

Inspected by an Alfa specialist (I think?) - you'd really want to be sure they also have plenty of R16 knowledge / experience before considering this appraisal of the rot as being exhaustive. Not that I'm saying the inspector doesn't know their onions (they must be used to rust dealing with Alfas!) - just need to be sure they know all the many weaknesses of an R16 shell and have checked them all on this car!!

Having said that - good to see a sensible start price and no reserve - realistic seller I'd say.

Damnation, a TS is precisely the 16 I want but that looks a bit too rusty for my likeing. I'd happily trade the 15 for a 16 as it was what I wanted in the first place.

But check this out:

That's right, the legendary Ripspeed DRIFT POWER HANDLE!

I'm sure that turned out to be an absolute drift weapon with the autobox and 100hp SOHC 21R engine..... perhaps that's why it has a dent in the wing (not pictured).

LOL. RWD, DRFT, YO, NOT AE86.When will it end? I'd love to see some of these wannabes when they discover that their new retro hardcore drift machine turns out to be an underpowered granny chariot. Or better still, the ones who buy old jap tat which isn't even capable of tyte driftin yo.

Funnily enough, I have one of those drift handles somewhere. I bought it for my Samara as I suffer from arthritis and the steering was bloody heavy. Plus it had a tiny steering wheel making it worse. Im no DRIFTA tho!

I had one on my Land Rover SII. When coupled with the appallingly sloppy steering it made progress entertaining. It was at least useful when trying to manouver the thing in and out of my drive, which was a 5-point-turn-affair when the neighbours parked directly opposite.

Looks like it may have alternator issues too - it's running in that pic but the battery light's on. Still a nice-looking car though - I love the bizarre rear lights.
