/\ Is that actually a Cat C write off though? It still has an MOT and I thought that when a car is written off the MOT is 'voided' and you had to get a new ticket once it's repaired?Suppose it could have been written off then MOT'd again of course...

Offtopic but I watched a 51-plate Focus being loaded onto a Copart transporter yesterday, the insurance company had written it off and sold the salvage. The damage? Paintstripper to the nearside doors. Two panels in a standard Ford colour.

Or just two door. Balls to the colour, Autoshite styles. Focuses have deffo reached bangerdom now, there's a lad near us who got one where every panel seems to have come from a different car. I'll have to go and get a pic of it later, it's awesome.

I suspect in this case rather than being the cost of repairing the car, it will have been the salvage value. The Focus seems to have held its value incredibly well over the years - last time I looked a grand would still only get you an early one with a fairly undesirable engine/spec combo (1.8 LX) and over 150K. The equivalent Mondeo would just be worth scrap.I bet the only Focus that would end up in a yard is one that has been damaged in some way, so they probably break for a tidy sum. Supply and demand perhaps.

Just seemed crazy that places like U-Pull-It will sell you a complete door with glass and trim for £45, and this car was a fairly common colour so it would have been trivial to locate two doors to repair it.Many folk forget that your insurance covers 'repair to pre-accident condition' and not 'make my car pristine in every way'.... an approved repairer is quite within their rights to get on ebay, locate a few parts and have it fixed for next to nothing. This was the case with my old Mondeo, the main Ford dealer quoted for a secondhand bonnet, headlamp and bumper which reduced the repair bill from nearly a grand to just over £300.Even fitting secondhand parts in the right colour, and then respraying the same colour over the top is easier than fitting new parts. No painting the inside, removing and refitting winders and locks etc...

Not everyone thinks like you regards this. The majority of people insist on brand new parts everytime. Some insurance policys are written that only genuine parts are used (others are written that they will source from non gen / second hand) what does yours say out if interest ? some people never check till time to claim.I'm aware of a 51 plate Laguna that only wanted a tailgate and spoiler, small repair to 1/4 panel and repair to bumper and rear panel. Repairs were authorised fitting second hand parts (as per policy) the owner went ape and demanded the parts were new. The vehicle was then total lossed (spoiler alone was £299) !!! he probably didnt want it repairing due to some other underlying issue  Ref the BMW - dont believe everything you see - the salvage yards are in it to make money. They often make bent cars look better (they even jig some cars and fit second panels on from a same colour car) just to make salvage go for more.I used to work for BMW and seeing that tow bar fitted to that car and the way the bumper lines up from the side shot I'll guarentee the chassis is bent . In my opinion thats not 'just a bumper scuff'Theres always lots of debate on here about what should and should not be written off - but remember it's not just the car and owner that decide. If the owner of that BMW was in Helphire at £250 a day credit hire your going to get him out of it quick and if that means writing his car off thats what some insurance companies will do..Rite i'll get off my soap box now

What many people forget too, is that they don't HAVE to go to a main dealer either. It's main dealers that are likely to want to fit new parts, and charge two limbs for the labour. I have never heard of insurance companies insisting on only fitting new parts, no wonder repairs would be more than the cost of the car.

for a fact Direct LIne will only authorise genuine parts unless the owner will accept non genuine parts (I understand Direct Line will not authorise second hand parts) other insurers will...

I've seen some repairers (and we're talking one VERY big name and some main dealers) repairing panels and charging for new genuine parts to make a nice sum ouf the job.Don't they reckon if the cost of repirs exceeds one third of the value of the damaged vehicle they automatically write it off? I don't know what new Focus doors cost from Ford but I bet when supplied, built up, fitted and sprayed up it would exceed one third value on quite a few cars no danger.Personally I'm amazed anyone buys 90% of advertised damaged cars for sale as I can't see how they can make any money at it. Once went to a local salvage auction and I swear straight, undamaged similar vehicles were cheaper at motor auctions and in the papers. Funny really but salvage sales seem to attract the kind of desperate bidders that will pay any money for any old rope.Bang on about Focus values and they're not alone. I can think of at least two other cars that you just cannot seem to get a decent model of for under a grand. Happily I own one of the other models I can think of and could easily get nearly twice what I paid for it (it was quite cheap!) 18 months ago.It also appears to me that stuff like Lagunas, Escorts. Mondeos and others are almost value-less these days, you have to almost give them away and nobody seems to want them.
