I've dropped a one-er on it, like.

Maybe this one will come to chez Pog for some love:

This is currently silly cheap (winning this too) considering some of the 'goodies' it appears to contain. Swap out the seats, wheels & steering wheel for stock items and cream huge scene tax profit on those items.

I don't want to be fetching stuff the length and breadth of the country, Reg... even though dino juice is under a quid a litre my only towbar equipped (ergo GR8 4 A-Framin') motor does a measly 25mpg, and that's on a good day without a ton of grot shackled to the rear...

A teacher at my school used to have a 602cc LN in white, I loved it and nearly bought if off him for a very small sum but I backed down because people started to take the piss even before I'd sealed the deal.Bastards. I'd love it now... wonder if he still has it...

I was actually considering what had been said of MkII Mondeos on here recently & this morning upon seeing one I actually decided they're the prettiest Mondeo! There, I've said it!

The bolder styling makes them more attractive to me.

Nah, for me it has to be the Mk1 Mondeo, it just looks less cluttered and more original, but I also like the Mk2 but in Saloon form only.

Overpriced Mondeo:

What do you reckon to MkII GTEs? There's a clean white one for sale locally for £495 which got me thinking. It'll still cost me a load in petrol, tax & insurance though wouldn't it.....what engine are they?

Potential money pit i would think. A decent one must be worth more than that surely?

As an aside, I had Astra's as my BR vans but my colleague had a Sherpa and used to drive it wearing ear defenders

There used to be a sub 20k dropside at Old Oak Common of a similar vintage to it got stuffed a few years ago

Pretty damned good on fuel (expect late twenties worse case scenario), most were 2.0 8V though being honest I'm a little unsure if they were the 112 or the 130bhp versions. Either one is a fantastic engine that will last for years and if it's the latter they pull very, very nicely (especially in 3rd gear) and have a decent amount of torque too.If you got an earlier one with the 1.8 engine and same close ratio box as the Mk2 Cav SRi they are utterly brilliant and bomb proof. Stupidly quick even in the Mk2 Cavalier, gearboxes are very sort after and an alround blast to drive. The 1.8 would run rings round any other car in it's class for speed, acceleration and fun but the Cav just couldn't handle.Later red top 16V probably the best of all: I bet if you drove one with decent/uprated suspension you'd absolutely love it.Bodywork wise rear aches first to go (easily sorted if you don't mind fibreglass or filler) then sills, inner wings (check behind all road wheels) and underneath but not too bad really considering and definately 100% worth seeking one out.

Perkins engine mans it's a winner. Company I used to work for had a couple of these with 1.7 ('O' series?) engines that were desperately slow and horrible.

I doubt you'd get much of a Astra GTE for £495, good ones are worth £1500 easily. If you haven't got somewhere secure to park it I wouldn't bother either as these cars were very easy to steal. If you want something reliable for £500 Reg, you'd be better off looking at things like that Kia Clarus, I'm afraid :( . Why not just fix the Alfa, or have you got to that stage where it just feels like throwing good money after bad?
