it's not the water pump making the noise? They have a lot of strain on them as they're driving the fan and do fail reasonably regularly. Mine seized solid while I was driving it but was squeaking quite badly before that.

You have to take the timing belt off to change it anyway so it's worth checking.

  • 3 weeks later...

I thought I'd make a small update, sorted the cambelt tensioner in the end, the Pinto one took some modifying and I had to change the bolts so they didn't foul on the belt but looks good now.

The down side is that the noise is still there, it wasn't the tensioner squealing but the water pump after all! Yeah yeah I know... I could only find one on eBay for £116 but Angrydicky now works for a well known classic car parts provider and has found me one for £85 so I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy it.

Meanwhile I've changed the oil again and spent some time sorting some more rusty bits out, it's pretty much there now. Have some new photos to fap over.

It's looking fabulous fella - I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of mine this weekend at 'some' point. The rear drivers side door (LHD here) is fubar'd on the bottom too.... I'm hoping I can get mine to look half as decent in the light!

Great job!

What have you purchased?

It really looks great. I love it in red it's an unusual colour for one of these.

Two things:

1: Have you been polishing the strut towers?

2: Re the water pump

I know, I know! I was trying to save myself some money but thankfully the cambelt is such a easy job that it isn't too much of a hassle.

Well spotted on the strut tops! There was a scab in the same place both side so I thought I'd tidy them up before it got any worse.

Apologies - missed this earlier.......

SD1 - carb'd V8 - tank has a few holes so either brazing and check or a 'good' second hand one I have a lead on over here. Fuel pump dead too so another 'good' one sourced while I wait for the new one......... it should be delivered tomorrow. Can't wait!!!! Thread will be started as soon as I have decent photo's... on purchase I failed miserably to get any decent ones.

Nice car :) I always liked the looks of the series 2 cars more than the earlier ones but I never had any luck with them when they were current. Series 1s always had swimming pools in the dashboards and the door trims DID dro off at frequent intervals while all the S2s I had blew up! Had a 2600 SE in black that looked great and ate its engine in a most expensive way.

Always wanted a 'twin plenum' V8 but never got round to it - too pricey now!

You have done a great job, it looks really clean :)
