rantingYoof
With a lot of brand new Mercs and other higher end stuff now getting 9spd autoboxes, and Jaguar's centre 'dial' 8spd auto gear-selector now 10 years old (!), my hands are permanently sweaty at the very thought of having to purchase one second hand in umpteen years time. Of course, there is an entire discussion that can stem from that statement there which I'm quite certain has NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE, and absolutely will NOT happen in this thread. In fact, the purpose of THIS thread is to celebrate historic automatic shifters which have come in many wonderful and spectacular forms such as the one found in the Volvo 240... And the 'Boxing Glove' that was the 3spd Lexus Soarer... The Saab 9-5 was still using what looked like a late 1990s early 2000s Vauxhall-derived auto-shift right up until the late 2000s: I'm hunting down an interior photo of my 825 Sterling as I think that had a cracking shifter. SHOW US YER FAVOURITE SHIFTERS! The more oversized the better... danthecapriman, gordonbennet, Junkman and 4 others

Hendry
I quite liked the one on the C plate Jag in The 51st State, no idea about old Jags so dont know what one it was but was like a T-piece lever you could actually clench in your fist.
flat4alfa
Jag 'J' gate is also one of the nicest designs to use... And also one of the clanky knocking plastics going too Why they didn't clothe the selector in something fluffy I don't know Used to spoil the ambience for me, clacking about. I mean, it was after all a Daimler. oldcars, barefoot and eddyramrod

Cleon-Fonte
The series Jaguar XJs had the most lovely shift lever ever. They should bin the rotating knobs they use now and re-introduce these. barefoot
Just looking at the pics, auto boxes seem to have become less auto over time.ie. more scope to over ride the automaticness in lots of different ways.

rantingYoof
This thread was inspired by the hilarious* 4spd auto in the 2008 1.8 VVTi Astra I'm driving at the moment. The shifter is nowt special and is not worthy of this thread. A particular favourite of mine thus far is the SD1's 'microphone' and Junkman's 'do you think you're lucky, punk?' red-seated dream machine.
