Missing the boat...

Ever feel like you've shot yourself in the foot, automotively speaking?

I do. All the bloody time. seems whenever sell an older car, almost as soon as it's gone the demand for that brand/model goes stratospheric and I end up feeling glum.

I mean, here's a good example:

Identical to the one I had, except mine wasn't missing bits!

I couldn't even get half that money, and that was with all the OE bits as well as the upgrades.

So has the demand for good ones really gone so mad in the last 18 months???

It's the same story with loads of other stuff I've had.

Take Dolomites for instance, Lewis manages to flog a not very exciting Dolly 1500 for £2000. That's good. But when me & my mate had Dolomites, could we sell them, could we buggery. OK, they were not as nice, by any means or as well photographed, but any old Triumph shit seems to make £400-£500 at present. I got £120 for my 1300, and wor Russ gave his 1850 away in the end.

And don't even go there with Escort Mk1's. Sold mine still in MoT & Tax for £700. Almost immediately afterwards the prices went bananas. You can't even get a rotten shell fit only for scrap for that now.

There's been loads more, all following the same pattern. OK, so it's rare I LOSE alot, but why do I always manage to sell before the rush.

Sometimes, I could almost cry.

I completely understand, I sold a '61 VW Split Camper for just under 3k a few years back, fully rebuilt, with full leather etc etc Same van would be worth £10,000+ these days.

Mk3 Cortinas.. I've had loads and up until a couple of years ago £1200 ish was the going rate for a nice GXL/2000ESuddenly Life on Mars fever hits and they start fetching stratospheric cash... and much as I like them, i find it hard to justify 3 grand plus for an old cortina

This is exactly why I'm perservering with my Fiesta XR2, even though it's crap to drive at the moment and needs a new roof/inner wing repair/general tlc. If I didn't have a garage to keep it in overnight, and needed to use a car everyday, I'd get shot of it STAT but my crystal ball says hang on to the bloody thing and make bank in a few years' time.

I know someone with a F reg Orion 1.6i Ghia that is totally mint and original apart from the factory RS bodykit with only 45k that's been in a barn the last 9-10 years I'm thinking about buying, keep wondering if it's will become collectible and worth anything.

I've never had anything likely to ever go into orbit price-wise! too obscure. Though I wish I hadnt sold my totally unmolested 1-owner 27k Marina pick-up for £400 a few years back, it could have lived in the back of my dads garage where my Talbot Alpine is currently gathering dust awaiting KRUSHAGE.On the other hand, I bought my Mazda 929 koop on a whim early in 2005, just cos I fancied it. since then there seems to have been a flurry of interest in old 1970's J-koops, should I ever feel compelled to flog it I think i'll get my £400 outlay back several times over. Dont get me wrong, that has happened entirely through chance and will defo not offset the thousands I have wasted over the years temporarily keeping hopeless old shitters out of the scrapyard.I'm just waiting for the beeb to come up with some sort of groundbreaking sci-fi crime drama where the the irresistible chisel-jawed hero chases the bad guys in a rwd Hyundai Pony, OMG LIFE ON M/A/R/R/S ASHES 2 ASHES NOT THE BILL CASUALTY SPOOKS LOOK NORTH AE86 CASHBACK!

Have to say my situation is similar to Mr B, unless there's some hit new drama about a struggling minicab office circa 1988 my lot isn't in much danger of soaring in value.Pog, your best bet would be not to use eBay as an accurate barometer of what cars sell for - that eBay ad is just a BIN price which no one seems to be taking him up on. It'll probably be on there for months, until he gradually knocks the value down to around what yours went for. CHILL!

Peugeot 505 GTI Family - it was rot-free.After a couple of years some turd had put the rear quarter-light in, rear axle was leaking oil into the drums, rear seat belts were mouldy (kids drop food on them  ) a few other bits and bobs. I had also grown sick of the interior falling apart and the dash on the second-series 505 is so oppressive it was bringing me down. So when it failed the MOT on the rear brakes I asked the tester if he wanted it in leiu of the test fee. He seemed very keen.Couple of months later I start looking on ebay and see there's a huge export market for them and I could've sold it for hundreds even without a test.

Didn't you used to have a Land Rover, pog? Mine's gone for a screentest today (with Michael Rod I suppose) and if it doesn't fluff its lines it'll be bought by a film production company. If its time on the silver screen is mostly with the bonnet up or with a roll of MIG wire next to it, you can breathe a sigh of relief

MK 3 Mini Sprite special edition in Cinnabar red with 1275cc Downton donkey from an earlier car - I got £180 following an electrical fire wich rendered it a mess, but the donkey and shell were OK in 1992 - how I wish I had kept that tucked away somewhere.Admittedly most of my early chod (ADO16's and the like) would probably fetch fair coin on the evil bay these days, but they would all have been a big puddle of rusty mush by now though.

Well thats it, I mean LOM was set in the 70's. A2A set in the 80's so the next generic Bowie tuned retro cop show must logically be set in the 90's and thats where we come in with some nice early 90's tat.I mean the 90's, Waynes World, The Maaaastcicht treaty, Windows 3.1, Mortar attacks on 10 Downing St, Freddie mercury dies, Diana dies, The queen has a horible anus, Bill Cliton, wearing trousers halfway down your arse so your boxers were hanging out, Puffa jackets - whats not to like?

Oh dear, where do I begin?I spent around 2 years dealing exclusively in Mk2 RS2000s when they were £1500-£4000. Sold the last one in '98. Just before prices went postal.Lovely, 65k mile XJS 3.6 Sport, H reg, lattice alloys, JRB with tan leather but gorgeous. Sold that for £750 about 5 years ago.Capri 3.0s. I've had loads of mk2s and 3s. Can't find a good one now for under £3k.Fiat 131 Supermirafiori Sport. £250 has to be cheap for one of those.'62 Austin Healey Sprite - £650 I sold it for and it wasn't bad.Perfect, and I mean perfect, Mk2 Granada 2.8i Ghia X Executive with 80k miles on, sold that in '93 for £1200.

^Wot he said. In recent years I've had 3 505 GR Familys and they all went for peanuts. It sickens me to see what they go for now.
