being messed about on ebay - where and how should I draw the line?

Hi all, no doubt there is a specific thread on here for ebay messers, but I'd really appreciate a few case specific responses to my predicament in order that I can act on the broad consensus!

I put a trailer away car on ebay and a guy got in touch, asked loads of questions, bid and won the auction at reserve price. He got in touch asking if I wanted a deposit, so I asked for £60. No reply, but he sends £60 to my bank account. He asks for my availability for collection, I email him. No response. I email and ask him his plans, he responds, saying he plans to collect on the Friday a fortnight after auction end. Still haven't had confirmation by Weds, so I email him and get the classic "May not make it, few problems at this end" email. Friday comes and goes, no sign, I ask him to tell me his plans! I get a voicemail, saying he will ring me later, I've tried him 3 times and just got the voicemail. I never gave a deadline for collection on the listing, but this is taking the piss! At what point can I pull the plug on this sale? I think I'm entitled to keep his £60 as it cost me £40 for the ebay listing - but where do I stand?

Cheers!

Ask for name and address for the online V5 change.  Then you have his name and address, check from 192.com  (other shitty websites are available).

Then ask for the outstanding money / purchase price or you will have no choice but to report him to Ebay as a non-payer.....you can send a recorded letter saying this to his address which usually gets a reaction............if you report him as a non-payer then after the dispute resolution in your favour as he has not paid you get your Ebay fee refund.

Yo doubleyeller, I understand that this is annoying, but we're hardly into "I'll pay by eastern union and my shipping agent will collect" territory.

As I understand it, a date has passed and he's not managed to answer your phone calls, although he has tried to contact you recently (yesterday, I assume the originally planned collection date?)

I'm gonna go against the flow here and say it's probably not time to give Sheefag his number or send in small claims.

Unless you have some pressing need to get it gone in the next 5 mins,  send a polite message through the ebay system saying "Hi, sorry I missed your call. Can you please let me know your plans to collect this car by X as I need it to be moved by Y"

It's entirely possible that the guy has actually been busy and been struggling to get time off work or whatever, not everyone is ready or able to go trailer a mouldy Renner up the country at the drop of a hat, I have certainly put a deposit on shite in the past and taken 2-3 weeks to collect because of work/family/etc.

IMO the effort to relist / send small claims / shit on his house is far worse than making a bit more effort to contact him and let him collect, the deposit + actual communication suggests he is not a typical ebay timewaster and will turn up eventually when he gets his shit together.

And just as I was reading that, our man phoned! Looks like it will go ahead, but as DaveQ rightly prophesised, it will take a week or two!

Fair enough really, it seems to depend on somebody coughing up some money they owe him, and his schedule, my schedule etc - but hey, it's an old Renault, and I'm not relying on the money, I have faith it will go this side of Christmas, so what the hell

Well, we shall see what gives, I'm willing to give him some time to get his house in order - after all, I got any number of supposedly "Interested parties" asking any number of complex questions, and how many of those do you suppose put in even a cheeky,low-low bid? That's right, none!

This guy at least seems to want the car, even if he has got to have a scrape up of his dosh.....

There's nothing fair enough about any of that, if you commit to buy something you do it because you can afford it, not in the event you manage to scrape enough cash in the next month or two.  The whole thing is systematic of a current culture, especially on ebay I'm afraid, and it stinks.

I sold a model on ebay last month, heard nothing from the (last minute) winner, so after two days told him if he didn't communicate/pay by the next day it would be sold to the next highest bidder.  He didn't and I sold it elsewhere.  He then pays me two days later, and can't believe I wasn't prepared to wait five days for payment/communication.

Fuck 'em, especially if they're not even able to make a phone call or send an email to tell you what's going on.

Keep the £60 to one side, give him a written ultimatum through eBay about when you expect him to pick up by, if he fails, report him as non payer and relist. I wouldn't give him the £60, if he doesn't understand what a deposit is he'd best avoid purchasing things that are way beyond his means.

I haven't an answer for you, sorry. However, next time I list a really crap car with no reserve I'm going to state ''the moment the bidding ends, it's your vehicle'

If I can get their contact details and they don't pay I'll just send the V5 off online and park the bastard in the middle of town and cancel the tax and insurance.

Classified ad only for car sales IMO. That way, the genuine buyer/s will view, negotiate and buy the bloody thing in person.

I don't sell many cars due to the hassle of it but the above is the most painless way in my experience!

Also, I'd never take a deposit nowadays, the car is sold only when you have the money in your hand.. real money, too! The first buyer to comply with all that is the person that gets to own it  :-D

I don't think that I will ever advertise a car on eBay ever again TBH.

The Honda Prelude was the first and last. (It sold on here thankfully).

The level of stupidity from the ebay responses was immense.

One lad turned up to view, asked if his baby seat would fit. Spent 30 minutes trial fitting his baby seat then offered me under half the asking price as ' I don't have any money really, but fancy a change'
