Wheels from France?

Largactil

Recommended Posts

After many years of trying, I've finally been successful in actually being able to buy something from leboncoin; namely a rare set of x4 alloy wheels & tyres in 3 stud fitment flavour.

The seller (an ex-pat) indicated he might be able to get a mate who was passing en route back to the UK, to take them to Bristol for me - Unfortunately his friend passed by at the weekend, and had no space for them.

I need to look at a Plan B - Has anyone managed to get something as large as a set of alloys couriered from France to Blighty for a sensible price? (They're 13" rims, but still have tyres fitted).

I'm looking at trying Mondial Relay (maybe x2 packages of x2 wheels & tyres in each, wrapped in heavy duty plastic and gaffa taped together?) - Does anyone have any other suggestions?

If they are still there last week of June, the GGG will be happy to collect them (no further revealings as of yet, so don't ask).

The only problem I see is that France is about the size of Russia and Canada combined, so if they could be relayed to somewhere

en route from Calais to Bordeaux, that would be well good.

Ultimately they would thus end up in Granadaland, from where I'm sure some relay can be organised to Dubh Lynn.

Ive had 2 seoerate sets of alloy wheels , with tyres, sent from France with very mixed results.

Mondial, , the obvious choice to a Frog were totally hopeless, twice. Each time they got them to a Depot some place in the Uk, but I couldn't find out where!

After they had sat in said Depot for around 10 days, seemingly awaiting collection ( despite paying for doorstep delivery) both sets eventually wombled back to their respective sellers. One refunded, and gaveup, the other just tried again with a different Courier.

From memory, it was either DHL, TNT or UPS but those same parcels were delivered straight to my house, around a week later, without issue, for around the same price (80 euros, or thereabouts).

The original Mondial labels under the subsequent Courier clearly showed my address and home delivery so I'm guessing their Uk side contract is vague, at best. It was clear no attempt was ever made.

It was a lot of hassle, with 50% success. I've not tried since.

Sorry to be a " glum".

Whereabouts are they, and when do you need them moved by? There's a possibility I could collect them in early July, depending on location.

Thanks folks - The wheels are in Vitrac, which is Dordogne territory in the SW of France, about 2.5 hours east of Bordeaux.

They're all paid for a couple of weeks back - A chap I know from another forum lives 30-40 mins away, and popped over to check them out / pay on my behalf. (He can't help with the shipping unfortunately, as he lives out in the sticks, and he's already done me a favour by facilitating the deal).

It looked pretty likely that the vendor's friend would have been able to transport them, so I didn't investigate any other options at the time - I figured I'd work out something if worst came to the worst.

If anyone's passing, that'd be great (I'd certainly provide some pez tokens) - If not, I'll check out DHL / TNT / UPS as Nigel suggested  8)

You know they will need wrapping before the Courier will take them? If they aren't covered satisfactorily they will not take them...

Depends which as to whether it's singly, or in pairs ( differing Couriers, differing rules) but each ' exposed' face will need a cardboard protective cover en a good covering- I use thick refuse sacks and tons of Gaffa.

Good luck getting him to do that......

Yes, I've sent wheels in the UK before (so much simpler!), and packaged them much the same way.

I've asked him if he's up for doing it - Hopefully being from the UK, he'll be slightly more helpful and less likely to give a gallic shrug.

If all else fails, I'll beg the chap who looked at them for me, to go fetch them and package them for me.

Shiply will probably do this. I looked into it to move a front panel from Isle of Wight to up near London. Essentially, it just put the word out to vans and truckers registered with them who were passing that way and they quoted to bring it back and/or relay it with an estimated time period. There will almost certainly be someone passing that way. I chickened out in the end because I was in no hurry and there was someone local on here who relayed it.

Not quite* local to me, I'm in Normandie. Plenty of storage room here if needed though.

More importantly what are these wheels destined for ?  R16 ? R4 ?  something else ?

Ah - They're for my LNA - Amil's in 6j flavour (only fitted to the Peugeot 104 ZS2 / sold as a motorsport wheel).

I'm not looking to bling the car up too much, but I like the chunky look of the ZS2 on the 6j wheels:

(I appreciate it's lower / has arch extensions plus a front splitter)

As opposed to the more common 5j Amils fitted to the Samba Cabriolet etc (which are a convex rather than concave design):

FedEx won in the end.

About x3 the price of Paisley Freight in the UK, but quite impressed that they collected from the seller at 13:30 yesterday in rural SW France, and delivered to me in County Dublin at 10:00 this morning.
