anyone know how best to replace a door

New POD

Recommended Posts

JohnK might have found me a door for the omega in the right colour, so it should be quite easy to swap over, right ?

I perceive this to be likely to be a right royal pain in the back side, requiring tools which I don't have, and will only need once.

It occurs to me I'll need new pins. But anyone got experience of this ?

Very straightforward on an Omega, I've answered you on OOF , Pins knock out easily with a wood chisel, can't be unbolted

Knock out the pins?  Have they learned nothing from the Chevette?  That's put me right off Omegas now.

when I done the Shitroen it was pins all the way. they have a circlip on them which when removed allows the pin to be knocked up and out.

5 mins max* to swap a door. and no swearing at all

*having #1 son thestag to lift the door off and steady the replacement was essentialz

On the Range Rover I suspect that it will be bolts however!, you should be able to remove the check strap and wiring and then simply lift the door off, has a weird fixing pin thing going on

Those Vauxhall pins are not too bad. I have done it with a big pair of pliers. Put the round grip on the pin then hold handle and hammer the pliers. If the new door does not fit, a bodyshop will cut and weld the hinge, which I certainly would not attempt.

I'd generally cut through the hinges with a hacksaw in a yard and take it all home to sort out.

On the hb viva, the pins were mild steel. Nightmare.

I've swapped 3 doors on the Multipla, The hinge pins simply unscrew and the door drops off. On many cars you'll need to unbolt the whole hinge. With a bit of luck the multiplug can be simply unplugged from the pillar and you won't have to strip the whole interior out to get to it. Best tip I can give is make sure the window is down so you have something to hold on to and get someone to help, doors are heavy and it's very easy to chip paint off everywhere as you attempt to refit.

I think my Mk5 Escort was the easiest ever. Just unbolt and lift off. Brilliant.

My Ltwt LR was easier. Open door & lift off, not even a check strap!

this is what we used at the vauxhall dealers i had the misfortune to work at

squirt of oil on em and use new pins to refit

Oh you too

I worked in a main stealer bodyshop as a panel beater for 11 grueling years.

I made my own pin tool out of a thick walled hollow bar with a notch cut out of the end.

I actually made one recently for a spare of the minute door removal on a zafira using a piece of 1"x1" box . Just cut a notch out of one of the walls on one end with the angle grinder so it fits snugly over the collar of the pin.

Everyone is right though, Vauxhall pins do tend to slide out with minimal fuss.

If it's a back door, open the front door, keep the back one closed and then knock the pins out with it closed. Then unlatch the door and lift it off

Easier than faffing with jacks

Actually despite my blazee comment "it's easy" I recalled my first Omega door change, I went about it slightly the wrong way. I've done 12 or so now and a whack with an implement is the way to go. Let me know when you've got it and I'll see if  can give you a hand
