Two cars, one week

All was going fine on the holiday last week. Weather was great, fun was had. Then Tuesday night happened. The wifes vectra died. Looks like cim module as it was throwing random fault codes then just refused to acknowledge the key. I had been up since 7am so I knew it was going to be a long day.

Wife and son went in a cab to the caravan while I waited for recovery. They finally arrived at midnight, loaded up and took me to East Dereham macdonalds for the first journey. I was a bit nervous as it was a diesel Renault auto. Second truck turned up and took me to Ripley. Landed at 4am,picked up the c2 and hotfooted it straight back to Lowestoft.

We decided to cut the holiday short and return Thursday. More joy had when we realised a dog, boy, two adults and luggage would not fit in the c2. 35 quid lighter for a trailer bought locally and all was well. The c2 performed faultless and all was well.

Friday morning car hunting started. Mrs managed to borrow a bit of money from her mum an off we went. A few dogs were viewed before we found this vectra.

An early vec c 1.8 sxi. Two previous owners, mot till January, two keys and only 85k on the clock with service history and a cambelt. Cost £500. Wife happy, I'm happy because she is happy.

Roll on Saturday morning, vectra collected and off we go home to relax. Wasn't meant to be as the c2 decided enough was enough and without any warning pissed it's coolant out and overheated on the way out of Chesterfield. Leads me to yesterday morning. After spending Saturday looking at a dodgy vectra for myself in Sheffield (the manor, dodgy area, blood spatter on the headlining etc)and a few other pups I called it quits. Gumtree on Sunday morning showed up a Peugeot 307 sw 2.0 hdi 90 with mot till January, last owner for 6 years. Has a whine on the alternator and needs a tyre soon but runs nice and bodywork is really tidy. Not complaining for 200 quid.

Does anyone know if the 307 will have a dpf? Pretty sure from what I've read it don't have a dmf. Also the electric folding mirrors don't. Fuse maybe?

It's the hdi 90 2.0. From what I've read it has no dpf, dmf and it's 8 valve. I've not lifted the engine cover yet though. I am pretty sure it's one of the last low powered 2.0 lumps though as I've seen 1.6 hdi engines in an 04 car. Also been told a dpf and cat are the same thing. I'm not too up on these engines!

That age is unlikely to have have come standard with a dpf. This age had is as an option iirc. Peugeot on their diesels used a FAP filter that squirted a fluid in that was stored under the rear seats. Worked better than a "normal" DPF if used for short journeys. However the fluid is frightfully expensive to replace!

It's not just me this time, the wifes car too! I was told the headgasket was a suspicion on the c2 7000 mile ago when I bought it in all truth but I've never had no symptoms to go with it. My cars are slowly getting better though! The good thing with the 307 is its an estate with a good towing capacity and plenty of space which I like but also has the bonus of better fuel economy than the c2 and costs the same to tax. Insurance is negligible too.

I had one of those on a 54, same 90hp engine

It was a soulless piece of shit that struggled to get more than 35mpg and had random bits of trim throwing themselves all over the place at 3 years old. It was, at the time, the newest car I'd ever owned* and I hated it. I hated it for what it stood for - it was previously my ex's parents, I didn't want us to buy it because of all the horror stories about expensive terminal failures just out of warranty (bearing in mind we paid about £5k for it) but I was railroaded into a financial commitment for it.

However, it never actually failed to proceed and that's a bloody good price. Also, it's a colour and not silver like 99% of them were.

Strange with the mpg mate, trip computer reading 47.8 mpg compared to the 40.1 the c2 read. The c2 actually calculated out at nearly 44 local driving when computer read 40. Not had it long enough to calculate how accurate the trip computer is yet. It's comfy, cheap and more suited to towing trailers though!

I can't see anything like that under rear seat on this.

Are injectors coded on this too?

You'll probably get £120 for the cat off it when it eventually expires so will break even when it eventually shit's itself, bargainous price that Bub

Fingers crossed it don't shit itself for a while. Longest I've managed a road going vehicle is four months. I planned to keep c2 and that's why I moted it. With this being more suitable I'd be more inclined to repair it in all honesty. Road fax and fuel economy is all a big help.

I had a 2.0 hdi 90 a few years ago- it was comfy and easy on the fuel.

The good news is that it's only the 110 bhp efforts that got the eolys fluid bags on them, the 90's were pretty basic mechanically.

Just watch the abs sensors for rust (the mount rusts and pushes the sensor onto the pickup) and if the indicator stalk is floppy, then it's either live with it or try and find a good one in a scrappy, but they all do that sir.

Well bought!

I will admit Tuesday /Wednesday was a long all in one two days. I arrived back in Lowestoft at 835,crawled in the van and demanded bacon! Wife said I'd earn it. She rang me up not long back to see me location. She had one waiting for me when I stumbled through door. A few fags and sleep for a few hours and I was good to go. Surprisingly being up all day and night then driving 170 mile didn't bother me but soon as I started to walk to caravan after getting out the car I just came over absolutely shagged.

Funny you mention the indicators. When I indicate right and it self cancels it goes all way down to left. Great for taking last exit at islands, not so much anytime else!

Yeah- it forms part of the comms 2000 unit with the wiper stalk and is a bit of a known fault on them ( typical later PSA shit). The internal gubbins go weak and you end up indicating left instead of cancelling out, as you've noticed.

Get a piece of foam (one of the green and yellow dish pads, cut a piece of the yellow with a blade)

Wiggle into indicator stalk gap, trim and fiddle as necessary, paint it black with a permanent marker for factory finish

They all do it, any from a breakers the same, new ones pricy and it'll do it again; there is a proper fix, but the above works fine

Luckily this is just the lowly s spec one. No frivolity like digital climate, auto lights and wipers or electric rear windows. I've got manual air con, electric front windows and a trip computer. The electric mirrors have a fold function on the switch but they don't. I'd like that to work though.

Cheers bud. I'll try that.

That's the plan. The silver one has had multiple new bits and bobs recently and overall it's a sturdy car with alloys and good tyres. Sadly I've no storage space to gut the entire car and knowing my luck, the first thing to fail on the black one will be something I've not removed and it will all be my fault and the world will end. For that reason and to warrant a happy wife and I value my testicles

so it will sit on the drive till it's been completely stripped. Day off tomorrow so in the morning it will go on axle stands.
