garage carpet- attract mice or no?

+1 for working on carpet, I use the old rugs the kids destroy in the house every couple of years.

Anything on the carpet is either a tool or came off the car.

Stuff doesn't roll away on carpet, how many times has a dropped bolt or screwdriver rolled just out of reach ?

I sometimes work on the grass, its nice to work outside on a sunny day, carpet stops things getting lost .

As for mice and carpet, your car has carpet, is it full of mice ?

Saving up for a two post lift, that is my next big purchase.

Carpet offcuts from our local carpet place (unsurprisingly) have served me well. Just use them then replace when they get nasty. Often free for smaller pieces, or just a couple of quid.

Mice have never been a problem.

Mice wouldn't be a problem even if they visited really. Unless they chewed anything important. Which they haven't so far. Years ago I had a family of wood mice living in my garage. They were incredibly tame and did no harm. I even named the more obvious ones. Destructive mice can be an issue though..

Suspect the carpet will not be an attractant though.

I have carpeted mine with old carpet tiles (rescued from a classroom refit at work) glued down in the areas around the cars and loose up the centre so they can be taken up and scrubbed. Also have a couple of shelves from an old filing cabinet under the oily bits for drips (these have oil absorbent sheets - liberated from the oil spill kit at work too)
