I have recently binned a load of Max Power, Revs, Redline & Fast Car mags from the early to late 90's, (soon to be made into Lidl's finest are paper) most of the featured cars had all, some or none of the following fitted -

TSW Venom alloys (16" diameter bruv)

Fat Willys Surf Shack stickers (was that a real shop / place?),

Kenwood or Pioneer 6x9 parcel shelf speakers with boot mounted sub woofers & amps

under car neon lights,

coloured indicator lenses (usually blue or green)

massive rear boot spoilers & those shit swoopy, open mouth front bumper bodykits (like in the first Fast & Furious film)

M3 mirrors

DTM style exhausts (upswept)

shaved / smoothed bodywork

Laguna front splitter

Everything involved in doing this to your car:

I know this sort of thing went on past the 90s, but - mercifully - you don't see wag-laden Ripspeed tat wagons like this any more. I'm guessing this has more to do with the cost of insuring something so extensively, erm, modified than an across-the-board improvement in the yoof's tastes?

Fido Fucking Dido - WTF was that about? Someone, help me out here.

Fat Willy's Surf Shack - on every single Escort (regardless of Mark No.) and Beemer E30 - their owners thinking it was the funniest thing ever since they answered the question on an application form which asked: Sex - they put , yes please.

Anti-static straps - Not all of them, just the ones that didn't actually reach the ground.......... Didn't excel at physics when you were at school did we?

M-Sport badges & fake M-Sport accessories on pretty much every single Beemer E30 irrespective of spec (usually 316 or 318). "It's an em-free innit" was heard depressingly often round my way at the time - FRO.

Those F.Awful glass hatch sunroofs - the ones that after five or more years always leaked. Still hate them today.

One that made me feel sorry for it's victims were the bits of sticky-back-plastic that got stuck onto rectangular headlamps with two circles cut in each in order to "Look like" the pricey quad lamp conversion mod (Moirette??? Or something like that?) that those with money did to their cars (and didn't look too bad tbh) whereas those that didn't, used the plastic!

For those who've never seen an example, the answer to your question is: Yes - it did look even worse in reality than it sounded, no-one was fooled, even the victims.

Remember the double-wiper blade fad? You could get an adaptor so instead of one measly wiper blade per arm, you could have TWO! For absolutely no advantage whatsoever as far as I could see.

Dont remember that, i do however remember chrome effect wiper blades, and wiper blade "spoilers"

Nah i reckon its a combination of 2 things, 1 the car manufacturers have cottoned on to this type of thing and now produce cars from the factory to cater for this sort of thing, Im thinking of these Fiesta Red & Black Editions, effectively Zetec S or ST-Line spec but in black with red roof and mirror caps or red with black roof and mirror caps, and these white ones with painted inserts on the alloys and coloured roofs and mirror caps. Vauxhall Corsa Limited Editions, and also manufacturers now offering styling accessories developed by themselves or affiliated companies, for example Vauxhall and Irmscher, and everyone of the manufacturers now offering big alloys, spoilers, skirt kits, gear knobs, carbon interior trim and mirror caps, exhaust trims etc. Total Vauxhall usually has a proper Vauxhall UK advert for accessory alloy wheels, styling kits and so on for various Vauxhalls so trying to tap into the modifying and tuning market.

2. The modified car scene goes through "seasons" just like fashion does, currently its subtle "euro-style", where you get a car, slam it to an impractical level on an air suspension kit, fit big deep dish wheels, take all the badges off, smooth off bits and pieces, and so on, as a result to people who arent into cars they dont stand out as much because they arent lairy and in your face like bright orange Corsas with flycatcher bodykits, and also rather than barry-up base model small cars with tiny engines, they are now doing it to higher spec, larger engined stuff (1.6 Zetec S Fiestas and 1.4 Turbo Limited Edition Corsas as opposed to 1.0 Envoys and 950 Popular Plus) and also larger cars, Passats, A4s, Insignias, Seat Leons, Tiguans, etc. and i also think young people of today either have more money or are more in debt than ever before to fund this because they all have bigger, faster, newer, more well specced cars than in years gone by, in some cases even have actual sports cars like Nissan 350Z and so on which are better and need less to stand out than a generic base Fiesta would. Back in the days we would buy what we coul afford and do it bit by bit, buy cheaper stuff, save up, visit breakers yards for upgrades, young guys these days take out bank loans and overdrafts to pay for interior retrims, sound system installs and air suspension kits. a guy I knew around 6/7 years ago, service advisor at the local Vauxhall dealership bought a £4K 5 year old mk4 Astra and then spent a quarter of the cars value and almost a full months wage on some speakers for it! Sheer madness!

Back in my 80's and 90's Halfords days, there'd be a Thursday night pint off the manager if any of us managed to sell a fluorescent pink or yellow set of wind deflectors for windscreen wipers. And another for every Sakura car phoney.

in my neck of the woods it was always a big fuck off turbosystems sticker accross the windscreen, and stick on rs turbo bonnet vents, and a max power sticker

I take your turbosystems sticker and raise you a Castle performance sticker, I used to love seeing cossies and rs turbos flying around back in the day with either sticker on, there were loads with both companies being local
