Picket line outside what used to be the pit in the village.

Look closely and it appears the riot van has just flattened one of their own or had a catastrophic front spring failure.

I remember Lawton & Wilson's previous premises on Millbrook Road East.  It's been developed now, but they had a long narrow forecourt just enough to chevron a dozen or so tripods in similar fashion to the colour photo (which is on Shirley Road, about half a mile away)

The was a little parapet running along the kerbside edge of the forecourt so the Reliants had to be fed in one at a time.

One early morning I was coming home through town from some late night shenanigans and somebody had lifted every Regal's  front wheel onto the parapet so that they all looked like they were trying to escape....

forgot to add....the colour photo I would have said is very early 1980s based on my memories....

Ended up as a Vauxhall garage (one of three in Chester) and I think finally packed up selling cars a couple of years ago.

What a fantastic early 70s period pic SpottedLaurel. I wonder where these kids are now.
Is that a Raleigh Chipper? ( not Chopper, smaller, and no gears)
My best mate had one, before his parents upgraded him to a Grifter.

Or maybe a Tomahawk? That's what I had, bought secondhand at the old Ranelagh Road Cycle Warehouse, which was just a few minutes from where this photo was taken (even though we didn't live in Ipswich at the time).

Yeah, not sure it's a tomahawk, mine had a rod operated front brake.

Yes, I know I'm 15 years too young to have had one, it was a hand-me-down.

I love the Ford pick-up in the circa 1959 pic. Looks home made, and not too happy at the back. I doubt it survived it’s first MoT, which I guess would have around a year or so after the time of the pic (newest vehicles look to be the A40 and the A55 Farina).

Interesting, even if it is mostly porridge.  I looked hard but could not see anything foreign.  The Ford Pilot (V8) on the left may have attracted an admiring glance from the people there, as would the pale Vauxhall driving towards the camera.  The Mayflower may have received glances and mixed comments.  I like the Minx parked with its back end roughly in line with the old Ford exiting (or looking for a space!), mainly because Dad had one in 1959ish when they were only about five years old.

Looks like Celtic versus Hearts and judging by the size of that stand, I presume Celtic Park.

That A30 in the foreground is an AS3 variant - from the first year of production.   All later cars had a revised fuel tank arrangement with a filler on the rear panel.    Not so unusual then but relatively uncommon nowadays....
