who's got wood?

For the first time in years my daily work car has no wood, just two types of aluminium brushed and polished- it seems very cold and clinical.

My favourite wood was the black bamboo that someone paid an extra £450 for as an option on my e61.

I can't believe I'm admitting this, but I bought a fake wood* kit for Mrs N's Freelander from eBaypost-17414-0-63643000-1495299863_thumb.jpegk

Just stuck on with double sided tape, it's never fell off I think it looks ok, although no factory Gaylander2s ever had wood trim.

I always liked the Rover R8 with its digital clock inlaid into some varnished hardwood. Class and technology.

The R8 chariot of beigeness has this feature - actually suits it well. Not real wood tho' is it? (Can't be arsed to go and check!).

Whereas the wood on the 406 just looked stupid.

Herald has a slab of 'proper' veneer that is the dashboard, old skool.

XC90 has 2 strips of wooden looking plastic that were probably a £2000 extra when new.

I remember my Dad's Pug 505 had no wood trim, apart from a random wood-effect ring around the 12v socket.

The very plastic-looking timber in 'my' 300E was apparently some kind of expensive African hardwood.

Mercedes have an amazing knack for taking the worlds finest materials and using the finest craftsmen to lovingly create something that looks like a £2.99 roll of Fablon that has never seen a tree.

Mine has it, I am not a fan of it post 1975

Agreed, maybe earlier 1965.

I do very much like engine turning on aluminium. Not used nearly enough on 60s/70s cars. Also some vinyl with quite a coarse 'grain' looks great on dashboards.

Quilted 'Nasa' headlining and the ever present flocking used on 70s Lotus interiors are other proclivities I'll own up to.

I like it in older cars when it is actually wood but the modern plastic stuff gives me the boak. The worst offender is Lexus, I presume they've never seen real wood before as it looks like someone has varnished a block of thorntons toffee.

Well it's Japanese; it's a given that even using solid African Blackthorn a Japanese manufacturer will make it appear to be formica. Most Jap leather looks and feels like cheap vinyl soaked in Mr Sheen.

320touring has slagged off the LS400s wood on his blog-wood that Lexus apparently went to Yamaha for to get the same stuff they used in their pianos!

I saw the wood being made for Mercedes in Germany.

In 1984 my then girlfriend (now wife) who had been studying furniture design, won a bursary to visit furniture factories in Germany. One of them was Interlubke (should have a thing over the "u" but don't know how to do it) and they showed us the wooden dashboard inserts that looked just like plastic that they were making for Mercedes. We were told it was all top secret and we must not mention it to anyone. The next factory (can't remember who) we visited showed us exactly the same thing and also insisted on secrecy!

I didn't show them the Wood & Pickett wooden dash I had in my 1275 GT!
