Uncle Jimmy
Why small? Volvo 144 is ideal choice here, you'll need £2k though. Solid, safer than most of the death traps about in those days. Fairly rust resistant and still fairly easy to get parts for and dead easy to work on.
cobblers
I'd love an old volvo but there's not much space outside to park one, and no space at all at work to park one. Looked at that second Smart today, it was right enough apart from the exhaust manifold blowing its absolute sack off from cold. Could have been the gasket but more than likely a cracked manifold, which contains the turbo. They're about £150 for a good used one, they don't look that bad to fit, perhaps a mornings work. At the time I didn't really know how bad the job would be and I couldnt even see the turbo or manifold without dismantling half the car so I said I didn't really fancy taking it on.I'll sleep on it but I might offer him £400 tomorrow (it was up for £750 without mentioning any faults
