W652PAB Green Mini Cooper stolen [and K452EUV ]

I read somewhere very recently that thieves can disable trackers immediately.

Wouldnt surprise me. You can buy a wee gizmo the size of a packet of ciggys from China which will block all mobile phone signals within a couple of hundred meters.....That would certainly take care of most sim-card based trackers anyway and I have no doubt there are other things to block more expensive trackers.

The other thing it boils down to....there are only so many places to hide something in a Mini. Quarter of an hours not very careful searching would find it no matter where it was, yank it out and fling it in a hedge.....

Apparently the new Focus RS is vulnerable to being started and driven away using the obd port

And there are whispers of keys being cloned whilst the perp is sat nearby...

I'm amazed insurance for anything over thirty years old isn't through the roof tbh. I'd quite fancy a mk1 Escort, but I'll never own one. I'd permanently be shitting it that some pikey scumbag was plotting to lift the thing the second my back was turned. Interesting reading about the new Focus aRSe. Technology is improving at a crazy rate, yet it's still not possible to make a car which won't be stolen after being left in the street for five minutes.

It leads me to my latest business idea - a 240v charging port like those used on Datsun Leaves etc , but fitted to an old classic, and wired direct to the bodywork. That'll learn them.

ID bunged on from a 25 y/o plus example, put in a container, and stateside for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Minis and Landies are fetching serious top dollar over there now. Someone posted on FB that their tracker fitted VW Crafter minicoach which was unique has been pinched, no signal from the tracker. Utter fucking pondlife they are, need a good beating, then a set of concrete Nikes and dropping in the sea. You cannot have anything nice these days without some bastard wanting to half inch it.

Not just Focus RS's, any Ford with keyless ignition (guess what i have...), a Focus ST was stolen last week from an nearby Halfords during the day and a friends Kuga was stolen about a month ago of their drive just after arriving home with the newly born baby. Apparently it's a big thing at the moment, all you need is a laptop nearby and you can pick up the signal and start the car via the OBD.

That was jollyfkr2 from this very forum who had his works van stolen.

Are diskloks the best physical security for classics?

Yes - the real deal and the correct size for your wheel. Anything less is bollox and in many cases actually make your car EASIER to steal......ie stoplocks and shite like that which provide a nice bit of leverage to snap the steering lock, then can be removed with a flat screwdriver. Literally the worst is the wee autolock thing that links gearstick and handbrake handle.

The only downside to a disklok is the bulk of them..... you dont really want it sliding about in the footwells or clouting you in an accident, but putting it in the boot makes it that less likely you will use it EVERY time, and it needs used every time.....just nipping into the offie for a tin of coke and some ciggys? put the lock on. This quickly becomes a pain in the arse.

See recent-ish heartbreaking photo on here of a certain stolen then burned out mkII Astra with the charred remains of a Disklok in the boot.

A good immobiliser will help but the trouble is apparently if they break in and can't start it, then they will burn it.

Hopefully a disklok is a visible enough deterrent that they don't bother at all.

I suppose the next thing you can do is a dig a deep hole in front of the car and concrete a steel tube down there, and then have a post that drops into the tube and a way of locking it in.

Every night I take mine apart and reassemble it in the bathroom...never had a problem

Seriously though its a fuckin drag that you have to a mindset where you wonder if it will still be there everytime you park up somewhere. Sympathy to the victims. Life changing brain injuries to the perpetrators!

Back in '92, my father collected his brand spanking new Sierra Saph TD company car. It had already had a gearstick lock bolted to the side of the trans tunnel prior to him collecting it - I guess the company assumed that standard Ford security was too shite. The lock was pretty much bombproof - rock the gearstick over to the far left so it located, and then clip the u piece in to lock the whole thing solid. It wasn't too intrusive either - surely a pretty good deterrent for opportunists?

Multi lock thing. I am pretty sure people used to shatter these?

Unless that was just bollocks. But they could be defeated without angle grinders etc, I am surem
