Tyres

Yes, another topic on tyres! lol

Anyway i need 2 new ones and ive decided on Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3s, size 225/45/17 94Y XL

Have tried all the usual websites, tyre leader, camskill, black circles my tyres etc. as well as local garages and the VW specialist I use, plus the national chains like ATS and National Tyres. Anyway by the time the tyres are fitted, balanced, disposal etc then the big chains are cheaper than mail order ones and fitting. National are £79 whereas they are £71/£72 from the usual websites like Tyre leader and black circles just for the tyre.

Eventually found a website called Tyre Plus who can do them all in for £73.50, happy enough with that until i go to select a place to get them fitted and all the fitting centres locally are all Kwik Fit branches (I assume Tyre Plus must be owned by Kwik Fit or something like that) anyway obviously i dont want to go anywhere near Shit Fit if i can avoid it. Are there any other sites I could try who could possibly beat or match that price that i havent thought of? Cheers.

I get tyres fitted at the local tyre centre for £5 cash.  They know me there, and do other cash jobs such as tracking for £10.  Obviously, no come back if there are problems but I've never had any.  Get work done for friends and so on to keep the business up.  Changes your view on the costs, though with the figures you are quoting, I'd still go to National - I share you aversion to Kwik Cr@p.

All about relationships :)

I was in the same predicament the other week as I was after a pair of uniroyal or toyo tyres and found it was cheaper to just go to our local setyres than it was all the usual websites once I had taken into consideration the price of fitting.

The cheapest I could get was £6 cheaper a tyre for a toyo through camskill but that was before taking in consideration the price of delivering them to my home address at £6.98 then I phoned about and most places wanted £10 for each wheel, plus it meant waiting indoors all day for the tyres to be delivered.

So it would of cost me £26.98 to save £12 plus most places aren't going to be so happy to fit you in if your getting your tyres elsewhere.

Setyres ended up charging me £50.05 a tyre fitted which I was more than happy with.

F1 autocentres are the cheapest I find - not sure if there are many branches in scotland though

Closest one to me is in Chester, a mere 187 miles away lol and they are £79.50 anyway.

Apparently these are one of the best tyres on the market, not sure why they are so cheap though compared with Michelins, Contis, Pirellis.

I've noticed that there seems to be alot less of a difference between web sellers and normal High St. type outfits recently. I'd be willing to bet this is something of a concerned effort on behalf of the latter to save their skins as the interweb merchants cut into their profit margins.

In days gone by some of the big players (ATS spring to mind) had a fair bit of company car business (several places I worked used them as the go-to tyre outfit) which means you get to charge a premium as the C/Car driver doesn't care - they aien't paying. With the massive decline in company cars, I suspect there's a lot less of this easy business about so they need to consolidate their owner-driver customers.

My dad recently found it cheaper to buy locally rather than interweb-it and I've checked out a pair for my Rover - again, little or no difference quite often once you take into account fitting etc charge per wheel.

I used to buy from a local indy, the manager was sound, no he wouldn't meet the internet price obviously but by the time fitting and poncing about were taken into account there wasn't anything in it.

I'd give him a short list of what i wanted, he'd phone around and find what he could from that list, job done.

He left and the new mgr wanted to tell me what tyres i should have, er no mate i'm the bleeding customer, hence why all my purchases have been via the net for some years now, but this thread has reminded me i haven't tried other local places for some time now, so next time i will have a ring round and see if anyone wants to try and supply what i want.

This is where the internet scores though, the range is brilliant.

This, normally discounts vary from place to place, even tyre leader  seems to be falling in line, taking into hand cost of fitting etc.

need a tyre on the twingo, 145 70 13, £35 quid which is good but i may well go down the part worn route for a tenner fitted.

I cant be dealing with internet sites, I too have a good local indy. I may pay a bit more, but I prefer supporting a local business.

Normally I'd wholeheartedly agree, better service etc, but at almost £40 cheaper than the Indy I've got to go with the web price at a big chain.

They're brilliant in the wet and unbeatable in the dry, it's all run on my Accord Type R.
