You make this sound needlessly dramatic. There is a small split in one of the steering gaiters. The rack's blood leaks out of it. I have a faint memory of being able to get the ABS light to show codes which say what the fault is. No idea how to do it anymore, but I found out on XJ40.com. You just lick it and count the little electric shocks.
