Mutterings of shite... Saab problems :(

Following a couple of unexpected recent acquisitions, I'm overflowing with shite!

In an attempt to keep on track with an ever growing list of jobs to do and maintenance issues, I'm gonna blog it up. Sort of.

The fleet currently consists of:

"That" CVH Sierra. Gone in favour of getting me Jaaaaaag back.

Saab 93 Cabby (ex Cap'n Calzone)

306 2.0 Cabby (force hail)

Transit Mk5 smiley Camper Conversion

Cinquecento Sporting

2004 Panda (er indoors)

1996 Jaguar XJ Sovereign 4.0 LWB (Daily hack)

All in need of work, ranging from half hour odd n sods to oh God what have I gotten myself into...

I intend to write lists of chores then methodically* work my way through them with the help* of some moral support*...

Hopefully.

I still think 306 floppy tops are truly handsome things

Oh I absolutely agree, I wanted an auto for long term keeps but the wife talked me into the Saab.

Had zero interest in the 306 though which is a shame.

Metro is a K series therefore needs to get into the sea. Otherwise carry on young man.

With me its a surplus of mopeds.

Yes, but it's a K8 and that makes it tolerable, rusty but tolerable.

Besides. I thought you'd cleared that shed out now and bought a "real" commuter... ;)

That Cinq is in the best colour; I had one exactly the same in 97; a real fun car

One of the cars that was so common when current and disappearing fast; loving that 306 too; a prince of a car to drive compared to the Saab

I just can't get on with cabby Saabs; I've drove quite a few; they drive shockingly on the sort of roads around here

Today's chores on "that" CVH Sierra...

Issues to sort:

Extremely thirsty (I mean just as thirsty as the Jag it replaced).

Noisy exhaust a là Cherry Bomb.

Struggles for power over 4k with unreasonably increasing thirst at speed.

I've been suspecting all of the above issues were connected. When I looked underneath I noticed the exhaust has been historically kinked and didn't appear that it would flow properly.

That coupled with its general condition and the noisy cherry bomb, mean no other option but to replace the entire system from the manifold to the tail pipe!

So, one complete shiny new exhaust ordered, eventually delivered and now fitted.

Verdict: it now pulls all the way to the red line and the low-down torque flows nicely up the range. It runs much more smoothly and on the brief 40 mile test it appears considerably more frugal. Time will tell!

I'll get it on the EGA next weekend and fettle the carb if necessary.

Much better!

Today has been a Saab day.

I rather like this one, aside from being considerably quicker than the 306 it replaced, it's more sturdy, feels better screwed together and it's much quieter inside, particularly at speed. I can live with the horrendous scuttle shake!

Despite using it daily since collecting it, Ive only had chance to look it over properly today!

Issues to sort:

Coolant leak. As expected, it appears to be coming from the waterpump so no great hardship. Access is tight but a relatively easy job.

As previously noted, it smokes. I don't think this is the turbo seal at all. I think its an external leak that is pooling then running onto the manifold round corners. It also smokes when hot and stationary, will monitor it for now but will eventually sort it.

Bulkhead. Although it's not fractured around the rack, there is a nearby panel sandwich that is starting to crack via rust breaking through. Needs sorting. There's rust (currently superficial) at the joint of the o/s/f chassis rail and bulkhead. I may just combine several of these jobs in the summer and pull the engine out to do so, makes sense really.

The front bumper is trashed, tbh it looks like it was shunted whilst being towed on a bar as the eye is bent and the bumper damaged around it. (I've done it myself towing an R25 with a 940). Fortunately, good timing found me a complete front bumper with fogs for £120 delivered. En route.

The only other significant issue is a nasty rust issue on the join between the floorpans and the front arches. In fact, it's rusted right through! Almost like the steel's been worn through by a constant stream of gravel, but I guess it's just thin tin that was never stone chipped. It will get cut out and repaired properly.

TODAYS WIN!: I regassed the air con and it now works! Cool!

Moar fiddlings with El Saabo today sees a complete replacement front bumper fitted including the missing fog lights.

Upon removing the old one it became very apparent it had been shunted some time ago. Fortunately no serious damage but it had had a low spec sans fog lights bumper fitted (was black resprayed blue). I've reconnected all the lights and it all works!

The engine oil leak is from a sensor ubove the starter motor, think it's the oil pressure sensor. Bit of a pig of a job, cat has to come off along with the starter so it'll have to wait for a couple of weeks until I do the water pump.

Productive morning.

  • 3 weeks later...

The Saab is finally coming together!

Today has seen a new water pump fitted (what a barsteward of a job), the leaking oil pressure switch replaced and an oil & filter change.

It's now oil and watertight! :)

Also fitted the correct black DI pack which has cleared the hesitation and misfire caused by the incorrect red one being on it.

New windscreen going in later in the week too.

Somewhat of a step back with the Saab.

Whilst doing all the above I noticed a split breather hose, nothing major and clearly causing no problems, but I ordered a new one anyway.

Fit the new hose and the car pisses smoke out the exhaust on deceleration (engine braking). Remove it again and it goes away.

No other symptoms.

Compression test is good, no smoke at any other time, no play in turbo.

Confused.

You're welcome.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you!

But, the complexities of said beast and the likelihood of utter destruction mean I actually (in the words of Keanu Reeves) "have to find the source"....
