Jim Bell
Well, today was a good day which turned bad. I decided to give the battery a good charge and take the car for a run to conduct some tests. Battery fully charged, showing as good on my piece of shite Lidl tester/charger. Jim Bell
Bouyed with enthusiasm, I decided to have a go at adjusting the clutch cable. Quick fiddle of the nuts and the bite altered very favourably on the pedal end. Result. I didnt break anything.

cort16
My panda did exactly this .If you and I started a car sales business we'd be out of business in less than 8hr as all our stock would self destruct overnight . Is that what your strange new noise was?! Or was this an earlier event man?
cort16
This was an earlier event. The alternator case had cracked causing water to get in and bork it.I had loads of smoke and stuff pour out the bonnet as it destroyed the belt .Current weird noise is undiagnosed but it doesn't matter as the gear linkage has broken . catsinthewelder
Would a full battery be enough for a one way trip from Teeside to Cannock? If so I can think of a potential buyer. beko1987 and JohnK

SiC
Tried moving the pulley with a ratchet? I had a mk1 mx5 that liked to sieze it's pulley on occasion on startup with an impressive amount of smoke. But giving it a quick jiggle with a ratchet to break the bond, it happily wanted to start alternating again.
