MGZR SRS Light On

A while ago, the SRS light failed to extinguish on our MGZR.

Wisdom from the 'net' said "Underseat Connectors, it's nearly always the Underseat Connectors".

I had a half arsed fiddle and it made no difference, so not wanting to be 'blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, Another glower in the night' a true shitter repair, some black insulation tape over the little blighter and it hadn't bothered me since.

However, the Emm Oh Tee is due and the tester was unlikely not to notice, or even be impressed by my repair, so I needed to get my arse in gear.

I cut out the connector under the drivers seat and replaced with 'proper' OE Style crimp on spades using my new 'correct' crimp tool.  That didn't fix it.

The passenger seat I had  replaced a while ago with a different seat with the later modified underseat connectors.  I had used some crimp connectios and when I undid them, one was 'iffy', aha, that will be it.  So i cut out the iffy connector and replaced.  That didn't fix it.

Look, it's quite a nice day, and it must be the Rotor Coupler, so that's a good excuse for a trip over to the scrappy to see what they have.  As luck would have it, a couple of Rover 25's and one was soon liberated of it's Rotor Coupler.

Returned home, disconnected battery and had a cuppa whilst the residual current clears (so i read).   Off with the Airbag, off with the Steering wheel, swop the Rotor Coupler, put it all back together.  SRS light still on, Grrrrrrr.

Replacing the under rear seat SRS ECU is not straightforward.  I understand they all have the same pano, but a coded to the configuration of the car.  So if you get one that matches the conig, it will work.  But if you took one off a car with pass side airbag and fitted it to car without, it wouldn't work becuase it it looking for an Airbag that ent there.  Both 25's in the Scrappy had pass air bag, our ZR doesn't, so it would be a Re-code by our local Rover Specialist.

Before I trundle off there, let us have another look at the pass seat connector.  I chopped out the remaining crimp that I hadn't replaced and replaced with with 'proper' OE Style crimp on spade.

Turned it on, BINGO, SRS light out after 3 or 4 seconds.  So it wasn't the Rotor Coupler, it was, as per Wisdom from the 'net' said "Underseat Connectors, it's nearly always the Underseat Connectors".

Isaac Hunt for not chopping them all out an re-doing them before condemning the Rotor Coupler.   Still, it was a nice day for a trip down the Scrappy and it's good to check out the stock in the yard from time to time.

I've got airbag woes with my ZT. I hit a kerb at speed avoiding a collision when a bus pulled straight out in front of me and it triggered the drivers seat airbag. (But not the one in the steering wheel)

It also fired the pre tensioners which is a pain as it has locked the rear seat belts

The airbag ecu is a one time use thing so needs replaced. I'll also have to replace the rear belts (already swapped the drivers seat)

Then it will need to go on a T4 to find out what sensors were triggered and need replacement before the light will go out.

To be honest i think I'll replace the rear belts and take the bulb out. No airbag light is an advise for test, light on is a fail.

I never knew that.   I read an article on a 'old skool' Mini site.  The chap had used at 2.7 ohm resitor in each 'plug' and then removed and reconnected each item 'one by one' until he found the fault.  I got as far as purchasing some 2.7 ohm wire round resistors from Maplins.  I only used one on the drivers side circuit before stupidly assuming it was the Rotor Coupler.  Had I of preserved, I might have found the cause of the fault eherearlier.

There a few 'fused' air bag fooling resistors on e-bay.
