Is it worth a grand?

The recent-ish 405 thread reminded me that I love Peugeot's last sharply dressed saloon, and that one makes sense as a daily at some point before they all disappear. I can't fault my current V70 tdi, in fact, it does everything a bit too well. Nevertheless I ended up being the highest bidder on this last night:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292025065068

It didn't meet reserve and the seller sent a message saying the reserve was £1100 and that I could have it for that if I was interested. I said I was interested but that was a bit salty and he/she said the lowest they could possibly take was a grand. Normally I'm quite headstrong when it comes to cars and would be sorting out train travel by now, but the tightwad in me thinks that a grand is too much for a 405, however lovely it is (Mi16 excepted of course). I just wondered what the concensus on here is really.

A few points to consider/ignore

• I don't need another car

• Volvo works very well

• But I love 90s pugs

• XUD, Bosch pump

• Second child due in a month, but could come any time. Car collection shouldn't be a priority as this time

• I kept looking at the pictures every few hours when the auction was live

• The money might be better spent doing a few jobs on the merc 190D that's currently resting at the side of the house

Help!

I've tried saying that my top offer is as high as I'd go but the £1000 sounds pretty firm. I know I should stick to it but Sod's law says there won't be one this good around for a good while. Should probably go for a look but it's a 300 mile round trip. Hmmm

I'm going to buck the trend and be the voice of reason.

It's 300 miles away, right at the top of what you want to spend, you've other stuff that needs fettling and a second nipper who will arrive just when you're about to set off on the collection caper.

One will come up with your name on it, but as an outsider this doesn't look like it.

I would say it's not worth a grand if you are buying blind. It won't be as nice as he says it is just because it's ebay. He also mentions the word retro and sounds a bit of a scene type which puts me off. £900 is plenty for it. Make the offer if you really want it but others will turn up. It might be worth waiting for one to come up that is a more genuine car this one just doesn't feel right to me.

No, it's not worth it. Too many miles, too much money and all that guff about the elderly lady owner with a car that's clearly been tarted up with the kit and the stickers doesn't sit right with me.

It is a nice car and would almost certainly be ace, but he hasn't a cat in hells chance of offloading that for £1,100. Offer him £900 if that's what you think you're happy with, if he turns it down then he needs his head testing. It's a £700 at best car on a good day.

At reserve of £1100 he would finish up with £1000.

He still wants £1000 although everyone else thinks it was worth no more than £880, which is £800 to him.

Your £900 offer is half way. Perfect!

You don't need it at this time anyway.

They are nice cars though.

Might as well add my slightly biased opinion.  I think the car's in the ballpark of £600-£800, looks like it's been well looked after and maintained.  Mi16 cosmetics shouldn't add anything to the value but seem to be quite tastefully done.  405s do seem to be gently appreciating now, all be it a nice diesel will fetch more than a nice petrol.  A lovely sub 100K diesel saloon fetched nearly £1200 last year on ebay.  You could get an immaculate Series II 405 petrol for half that probably (if you can find one.)

At the end of the day they're lovely things to drive and can be used very easily as a daily, I've been driving 405s for 10 years with minimal maintenance - spares are usually dirt cheap.  I'm an old codger now and it's a nice feeling to be in a car designed when working suspensions were still offered as standard.

A perfectly fit GTX two litre manual saloon just went on eBay for half a bag and half a scare.

I didn't bid, for obvious reasons.

Besides, proper 405s belong to either Carlo, or me.

We shit on Diesels and too many pedals.

I didn't see that, got a link?

Many others have implied that for a standard 405 GTX, with a few stickers to make it look like a Mi16, it's a bit pricey. Is it really worth a £1000 to you?

You've got a lot going on in your life at the moment - if the necessity, pleasure and enjoyment for you of owning this car justifies the resources and effort you'll put in to buy it, go for it. Life is too short, etc.

If I were a 405-licker and (a.) I had £1000 to burn, (b.) I am nursing a semi for this particular car (c.) it happens to be a unicorn in pug circles, I might go for it.

As it happens, I wouldn't go for it. I do like the 405, but not '£1000-like' and I have no desire to own a 'normal' model, even if it really is mint. Sorry.

The question is - which is a better long term proposition?  Possibly not the 407.

Long term? Not sure but 407's are dropping faster than a whore's knickers in value. They'll be 500 quid anytime soon and good, disposable motoring in a car that is insanely comfy and far better to drive than any of the rags will tell you. Same with all this old shit, buy a decent one and don't fret over it.

405's must be at the stage now where they feel ancient and nipping to the breakers for bits is no longer an option. I love 405's, and a 1.9 GTX was for a long time the best handling/riding car I'd driven.

Decent 405s worth £1k surely. Yes you could get a 406/7 but that would be for another forum...

Miles on this one are a bit high. It wouldn`t bother me but it does affect values

I would be worried about the recent head gasket though, if its been cooked it will never be  the same again and it may well go again soon

The word `lookalike` puts me off too
