Road Tax 'Period of Grace' Question

Looks like we are in for getting the Duster on 1st March but the Chevy's road tax runs out on 28th February.

I am loathe to tax it again just to drive it up on the 1st as I'll almost certainly be out of pocket when it is 'refunded'.

Is the period of grace (2 weeks?) even a thing any more or is the fact that everything is online now means that it is deemed you have no excuse?

Is the Chevy being chopped in for the Dacia? If so I'd be tempted to ask if it's possible for them to either pick you up (of course as long as it's not miles away), or possibly for them to drive your new car to you. Then I'd your drive Chevy up the day before and leave it there.

I mean it won't be your bum that is first on the seat anyway, as it's likely had factory workers, dock workers and dealer mechanics all sat in and driven your new car already anyway!

If you ring and explain your predicament, I'd hope they'd sort you out as you've given them business and likely to in the future with servicing, etc.

There was NEVER a period of grace for expired tax. It's either taxed or it isn't.

The only thing they had, which is no longer applicable (because no paper disc) was a grace period with regards to DISPLAY of disc. I.e. you had paid your tax, but were waiting for the physical disc to arrive in the post.

Don't confuse the two!

Sounds like a plan!

I've just used the excellent TOTALCARCHECK to remind myself of when the Avensis MOT is up.

It just told me that I've yet to tax the Rover which I've now had a month.  It's done 1500 miles in a month.

This sort of stuff used to make poo come out of me, but I'm not so sure anymore.  (Probably get a summons now LOL)

I accidentally did over 3,000 miles in the Jag after I thought I had taxed it but hadn't.

The only reason I found out it wasn't taxed was because I got a letter in the post telling me that it wasn't on SORN or taxed at all on their system and hadn't been for a few months, not because someone had spotted it on ANPR.

I had been all over the place in it and mostly driven it round Leeds and Bradford without even pinging on any ANPR.

May as well risk it, nobody in cop car world is going to pull you and make you wait for a recovery wagon for one days tax, most likely just remind you to get it done and that's absolute worst case scenario.

I drove my Zafira down the unit untaxed as frankly I didn't know when/if it would be fixed and despite driving past a copper he didn't even flinch, I just think their attitude in this day and age is "The ANPR will do that for us".

Just make sure you SORN it as soon as the p/x is complete, otherwise the dealer may say that they received on x day and you still owned it therefore you owe x days tax or pay one millionty pence in fines etc etc.

I've tried registering a car I've bought for spares as Sorn, tried on the website but can't register it as they haven't recieved the old owners V5 back. It's going nowhere but if I can't physically register it as SORN what are you supposed to do.

Yes I had the same the other day because " the v5c was currently being changed".

Sorned it when I could and no fines/issues.

The system still has quite a few glitches in it even after all these years.

Hmmm, personally I think how much hassle is it to tax then wait for a refund to be issued?  When done on line it's easy and the garage will send off the v5 so you'll get a refund.

I bought a car and the dealer wouldn't let me take it off the forecourt without tax and proof of insurance.  I think they must be liable or something otherwise perhaps?

It's up to you and your conscious but why spoil the thrill of a new car by worrying about the old one?!

The way that newfangled computer tosh works nowadays, there is no need in the world to tax a car before the next 1st of the month.

It will always show up as being taxed for the remainder of the month it was purchased in on any Gestapo record.

Because it actually is.

I'd be concerned with much more important stuff, like whether the cigarette lighter and interior illumination work.
