I could write horror stories about loads of the tat I've owned.

My first RS2000 Escort got through three engines in a month. Nothing to do with the huge Weber 45s hanging off it. No. Nothing at all. Nothing to do with me driving it flat out. They just 'failed"...

The brake master cylinder on them is a bugger to remove. Looks easy, turns out to be bloody awkward.

You appear to have missed the Interceptor's other two party pieces, did yours not shit its auto box and starter motor? Getting the box out is a challenge.

The starter had been replaced not long before I bought it - and it was still sluggish - and I had to put a torque convertor in it. Is tgst not on my list? I had a Range Rover at the same time with the same box and it did its torque convertor too.

I thought the 'box was bulletproof though?

It is when not being driven by someone who's way of getting a badly running Jensen to move is to just drop it in drive at 2000 rpm whilst holding it on the brakes. He did that for 70 miles. Turned the Torqueflight into a box of square bearings.

The car I wanted so much. So very much. That I spent the best part of 2003 to 2006 Looking for a good one, at the right price.

I'd seen a mk2 Cavalier SRI 130 in the Autotrader for £600 in mid 2003, and got permission from my wife to go and look with a view to buying it. But it was sold. So I started frequenting mk2cav.com, and quickly decided I needed either that Sri130 or a Calibre.  Went to look at 5 Sri's and 2 Calibres and was put off, the Calibres due to what I now see to be minor issues. Found a FREE 1.8 CDi Auto, then a £40 1.8 SRI, and in the mean time kept looking at Calibres and 130's (including considering a 130 that Cavcraft/billy had under a mountain of stuff in a lock up in chester)

I got close to swapping the CDi Auto  and £300 or a Convertible and a very rotten Calibre, but was too gutless to do it.

I almost bought a 2 door calibre replica with a SEH for £300 but was too pussy.

Finally in 2006 I got a small inheritance and after looking at a couple of 3 door cosworths for £8k to £12K, I went and bought the nearest Calibre to me, which was owned by the guy who had bought the 2 door.

It broke down on  the way home (ignition lead fell out of the coil), then the oil light started flashing when it was warm, then I noticed the metal power steering fluid reservoir had a massive hole. Then there was all sorts of electrical faults. I eventually was given a 1992 mk3 SEH engine with low miles, and paid to have it fitted, but it kept Failing to proceed. Eventually I twigged the coil and dizzy had different connections so the coil lead was overheating.  I fitted mk3 Cav GSI front brakes, but one caliper seized causing much smoke and stress.  but I had nearly 2 months of gradually better reliability, and was coming to terms that the none original leather interior and bodged rust would have to be dealt with, plus the fact that the front screen was off the 2 door and had it's reg number engraved in it was pissing me off.

Then on the hottest day of the summer it wrapped a conrod around the starter motor whilst on the Runcorn bridge. Delaying my return home to start our holiday by 3 hours.

Whilst on Holiday a bloke off Mk2 Cav made me an offer on the phone that my wife made me accept, and that was that.

my CalibrE Dream Ruined.

I went back to using the 1.8 Sri as my daily driver for another year before the HG went. I have a great regret that I didn't fix it, but it was time to move on.

I now see 2003 to 2007 and my almost 5 year obsession, as being close to mental illness.

Sometimes I regret buying my Alcyone - mainly because the bloke I bought it from lied through his teeth about the faults it had.

He claimed to be an enthusiast as well (and never sent me the parts he promised me within the price).

Never mind - it was cheap for what it was and I'll make it ten times the car it was when he had it.

Many years ago I needed something to tide me over between company cars and ended up with a Wolseley 1300

which I acquired cheaply but was warned that it had a mysterious vibration.

I concluded it could not be anything serious and in all other respects it was in nice condition and anyway I had already

had lots of previous ADO15 grief like so many others on here having owned four Minis all of which had problems of one

sort or another so how could anything else go wrong?

Well it lasted about three days taking me from home to Market Harborough and back before it broke its crank.A bit like xtriple

I then spent a happy Christmas changing the engine in the freezing cold for a replacement that my Dad had sourced for me.

Happy days (not)

Don't regret it. It's an interesting thing, it's not madly technical to fix and because it's a Subaru as long as there's fresh oil and belts on it it'll run forever. They're surprisingly nice to work on once you get your head around how they're engineered. Engineers obviously have a lot of sway at Subaru, it's just a shame they use loads of cheap Nissan bits inside.

The SVX is worth restoring NOW. While bits are out there. Get it right and enjoy the thing. Keep it tidy and solid and it'll bring a few bob in the future.

It might not cost as much as you think.
