Bren
What would you love to own but know you never will? I think we all have a car we would love but because of cost, reputation etc you acknowledge that is unlikely you will push the boat out. I would love a Range Rover sport but the complexity and unreliability mean it's a no no. Plus all the sub £10 k examples have around 130k meaning they are at the age where they are highly likely to grenade. Supercharged jag in V8 flavour - cheap to buy but first big bill means its going for spares. Audi RS4 - not spending £15 k on something with over 100k on the clock. Jensen interceptor - rising prices mean the boat has well and truly sailed. What others have I missed? JeeExEll and mercrocker
pshome
This: To me the ultimate piece of shite ever made. Everyting is perfect, the looks, the interior, the engine, the electronics. I do reckon that even if a lottery win (.. i don't play the lottery, consider it as a voluntary tax, maybe i should) would allow me to buy one, it will eat all my retirement savings within weeks. DVee8
For me a Porsche 911 turbo, but at the cost of a house i don't see it I have had a Jag S-type R so so fast,so so fragile. I could maybe see one of these CL500/amg or 600. Aston Martin, pshome and spike60

RayMK
Tatra 603: Came dangerously close to buying one in the 1980s. It was for sale by a Czech chap near Cardiff. He also had a Jensen CV8, Skoda Felicia (front engine, rear drive type) and an Aero in his fabulous garage. Wife commandeered the funds for a new kitchen. Oldsmobile Toronado: Saw one for sale in Everett, WA on one of my frequent business trips there. $700!!! This was in 1997. A half baked plan was hatched to drive it to the East coast and have it shipped to the UK. Work got in the way. Plan was stillborn. Wartburg Knight: Tried to persuade my dad to buy one. He gave a flat 'NO.' Now I feel too old and decrepit to buy a decrepit twostroke. pshome and Sheefag
Cavcraft
A 'Series' LandRover, the price of which are spiralling out of control thanks to the actions of the OLLI/scene tax brigade. A Lotus Carlton, which I never have, and never will be able to afford. Italian Lambretta. Kawasaki KH250/400 Suzuki RG500 GT380/550/750. yellowperil
Citroen C6 for me as well. Probably the only car made in the last decade i actually yearn for.Annoyingly out of my price range and I have a feeling one day they will become popular as a classic, with corresponding price rises.Also... Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500, I don't allow myself to dream about owning one because I never will.Also... Hello and happy New Year to all!I have been unable to post on my phone, but have been lurking for months. Supernaut
Any big RWD Japanese coupe. Or any RWD Japanese car full stop. All the prices on them are silly now because DRIFT SCENE Y0! I used to have an MX-5 from 2012-2013, sold it for £1,450 and I seriously doubt I could find such a good condition mk2 1.8 for that money these days. carlo
Third thumbs up for a Fiat 130 Coupe, one of my all time dream cars probably just out of reach though now and in the future. Although I have owned a Peugeot 504 Coupe, when I had more money. Facel Vega of any description. Bloke I bought my Xm from is having his testes hardened atm by all accounts. I hope he succeeds with it, they are lovely to look at, an engineering marvel and OH! the door bins. You haven't lived unless you played with those... +1 for big engined rwd Jap coupes and Lotus Carlton. mercrocker
Here are one or two that I will probably never see so cheap as when I couldn't afford them the first time (and came within a gnat's cock of buying. Most annoying was the Mustang which I deferred to put a bigger deposit on the house I ended up losing in a messy divorce..... oman5
Rover 75. I've loved them since they were launched. But having known quite a few people that owned them, everything suggests they're pups to be avoided. Any 80s Jag. I've also had a deep seated hankering for these '80s Toyota hiaces since I drove one back in the early 90s. Three abreast seating and a column change, plus the 2.0 petrols went like stink.I well and truly missed the boat here, most of them went for export to Africa. The odd occasion one does turn up for sale in the uk it's similarly priced to those awful air cooled VW contraptions all the hipsters want. alf892, Lacquer Peel, Sheefag and 1 other

But having known quite a few people that owned them, everything suggests they're pups to be avoided.This. They are too old to be a useful reliable car as daily transport and if you're buying something old for the weekends you may as well get something old... Also: Ford/Rockabilly tax means I'll never have one of these. Hell, any pre-90s Ford is out. Although worryingly my "budget" option for 50s motoring is now also out of reach: Anything 1970s and Japanese as well, it'd probably be cheaper importing something from Oz than buying anything worth having in the UK. Anything that is in the UK will be rotten and parts are a rarity. I'm also going off the idea of anything featuring Hydrasag suspension due to parts availability, also Allegros seem to actually be worth something now. Sad times. eddyramrod
There's a lot of stuff I would revisit if it was still available at the prices I paid "back then" or in some cases, available at all!Probably top of the list is a Bedford CF, pre-facelift, petrol van.Yes, very much like this, which was mine in 1983.Marinas and Rootes Arrows have now left me behind, as Cortinas did long ago. Which is a shame, as I loved my mk5 2.0GL auto.In fact almost anything RWD is running away, as the aging supply dries up and the drifters and rally boys kill off everything they can get. There's no way I'll have another BMW, or a Mercedes, and as time goes on those will be the only things left. Even what's left of Detroit is largely FWD, as it's been for 30 years or more. Rolls Royce? Bentley? Oh yes please, absolutely, but even if I found one I could afford to buy, the first FTP would see it Hiabbed away. Jags? Done that, when you could buy a Series 2 Sovereign for a ton......and whatever I may say on X308 threads, the appeal of the later cars simply isn't as strong as the thin-bumper S2. Mind I reckon I'd jump at a 308 at the right price, but see my RR comment above, same applies. Champagne motoring on council-pop money? Yep, story of my life, totally.
