Fear and Loathing at SVM HQ

Now on mingebag wheels. Rides better. Washed it too. Still looks bogging.

In other news I did some scrapyard raiding today so it now sports a fuel cap, OEM front floormats, a handbook & folder, a rear ashtray, a load cover and some other bits and pieces which were missing.

 

Irritatingly all the eggcrate grilles I found today were broken, every one that had sideskirts was on the ground with at least one car on the roof and the centrecaps off the previous wheels don't fit these ones so there is one missing.

Today at SVM HQ

The V40 had been behaving impeccably since bleeding the clutch up, so in true SVM "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" fashion I lost the clutch again today whilst out for lunch with the gaffer. It doesn't want to bleed up this time so it looks like the slave is fucked altogether now.

 

I turned my attention to the 740 Turbo.

Initial inspection seems to suggest it's actually okay underneath, so reeling from the V40's clutch issues I set about the 740's clutch. I cleaned up the (new) slave cylinder and after a bit of dicking about I managed to get it actually seated in the bracket and the circlip in place. Buoyed by this and with the aid of my glamorous* apprentice Alex, we spent ninety minutes failing to get the clutch to bleed up on that bastard either, ending up with either a solid pedal at 2/3rds travel or absolutely fuck all.

 

Armed with itchy shit from this evening of fuckery, I did the done thing, got in the 406 and went home.

 

Have some photos of the underneath of a 740 Turbo with a sweaty diff and no fucking clutch.

The 740's underside looks remarkably good for a car that's going on thirty and has probably lived in Scotland for many years. Even the radiator support panel isn't the worst I've ever seen; replacements are available and can be bolted on, as they aren't structural.

I am trying to find out more of it's intermediate history, but it was supplied by the Volvo dealer in the town where I live, was exported to Australia, then brought back. It'd been with it's last owner for over ten years so it's been back a while even at that.

We finish the day as we started. Two Volvos, no clutches. One Volvo is now clean.

Once again, the shame of travelling home in a Peugeot. Oddly I posted to that effect in one of the Volvo owners pages last night and it appears about 75% of Volvo owners have an XUD powered Peugeot as a backup for when their Volvo inevitably shits something.

I was going to say that the underneath of that 740 looked pretty rust free for a 28 year car!

 

I wouldn't be at surprised if the S40 is worse. I also agree the S40 looks much better with the subtler wheels. The original ones are two 'fast and furious' for my liking.

The Council Estate believe it or not is the most sound bodied 700 I've ever owned, never been welded at all. This Turbo was tickled last year but nothing catastrophic, will need the sill ends tidying a little but I'm more concerned with making it move under it's own power first.
