A friend of mine has a poorly Ovlov which they have decided to sell.

The car:

Volvo V70 Estate (1996 - 2000) MK 1 2.4 Classic 5dr

Fuel type Petrol Engine size 2435cc Body type Estate Colour Silver Transmission Automatic Date of first registration 12/04/2000

Here is the info I have as to the problem and condition of the car:

We have a broken car, took it to the garage who said what was wrong, Chris got a part and fitted it and still don't work so already down £100. Car worth about £600. Do we
A. Take it to the garage and tell them to sort it and pay whatever it costs
B. Sell it as is
C. PX it
D. Something else

Only want a very cheap car to get Chris to work and back

Mot until april. Everything is fine tyres etc but only goes in limp mode

"It was the engine throttle body. But it might be the MAS mass air sensor" - is what Chris says to me

No rust, it's perfect! (in response to my message "Don't you dare scrap a 2.4ltr Volvo v70 that's managed to survive 16 years without rusting to death!"

The man from VOSA, he say:

Car is located in Torquay, Devon.

A small amount of research indicates that the newly fitted throttle body probably hasn't been paired with the ECU properly and/or the MAF has also gone.

They have given me no guide price as to what they'll accept. As per the message above they consider it worth about £600 when working, so that should give you some idea of how they value it when not working.

Please let me know if you're interested and I'll PM you their contact number - I don't want to put it up on a board viewable to the public for obvious reasons.

I'm in Torquay but of no use as I don't want a car and can't fix theirs due to old age/crippleage/laziness! But, unplugging the MAF often does work but fuel consumption goes up rather. Can't think of a specialist Volvo dealer round here other than Seymour Horwell in Newton Abbot who will re-set the ECU but charge like wounded rhinos...

They are worth a ring though if you can get past the receptionist!

If going into limp home it's throwing codes. First thing, what is the code returned?

Throttle bodies have a thing for dieing on these iirc too.

Surely a known working second hand TB and MAF should be pretty cheap for this if throwing parts at it.

My phase 1 cars have all been the older throttle cable types but as mentioned the ETM (electronic throttle module) is a common failure on these (they changed in 1998 or 1999)

I believe when the ECU changed along with the ETM, that's when VIDA was introduced for diagnostic stuff. Plenty of people on the VOC forum have VIDA clones, so there's likely to be someone happy to plug it in to proper Volvo software to check it out. But not me, as I'm in Cumbria...

Yup, sounds like ETM.

This £100 part that was fitted.... Was it just a s/h one? If so, its going to need coding to the ECU, which is a job for VIDA. He could however, send his old faulty removed one off, get that repaired and refit it. The ecu then recognises it.
