Ratdat
... on a really stinky crusty Renault 5TL... Hauled it home and gave it a mega clean as it was covered in moss and slime. It is very very rusty so is going to require an biblical welding session ... but it's an proper early one (1973) and it's orange so it MUST be repaired! Dash gear change and extreme basic-ness FTW! M'coli
That's what I think of when I picture a R5 in my head, none of this gearstik on the floor nonsense!
Mr_Bo11ox
that 'warny' lot seem to sell loads of panels for these old 5's, getting hold of them in the UK is a real pain in the ass though. http://www.warny.be/data/pieces.php?p_id=258&p_trade=
FredTransit
I had no idea they were so old! Any chance of it being built in 1972 and tax exempt?
bigstraight6
Blimey! havn't seen an early R5 with the dashboard mounted gearlever for a VERY long time, nice one
mouseflakes
Now you have to track down an original 'wet look' orange interior!Well done RD - and good luck with the welding!
Ratdat
It was registered 1st June '73 so not much chance of tax exemption unfortunately. I'm going to hoover up as many panels as I can get for it over the next year and will most likely use my '83 5TL to donate some sheet metalwork once it's MOT is up next year. Comparing the two, there are hundreds of differences in the bodyshell so re-shelling it is a no go really. It's pretty rotten but I have repaired stuff like it before. It'll just take a bit longer than normal! I think I'd probably be best off driving over to Belgium and just asking Warny for one of every panel they do for it Some of the more minor rust... The interior is just great...
Ratdat
Now you have to track down an original 'wet look' orange interior! Well done RD - and good luck with the welding!Like this? That would be awesome! The black seats in it are thankfully pretty decent but the backrest of the rear seat doesn't match. I think it might be from a '72 model. Fortunately all that's missing is the ashtrays in the back, the sun visors and interior mirror. Even the rubber flooring is all intact still. mouseflakes
The black seats in it are thankfully pretty decentToo right - those black 'leatherette' interiors Renault did back then are ace. They look great and reach arse temparature much faster than leather does on a cold winter morning.

MrRegieRitmo
Your next daring Renault challenge, should you wish to accept it, is to fish this out of the drive it's lived on since at least the mid 90s maybe even longer!

Dukestar25
Hillman Avenger, I know because I've been there when it was more visibleIf it's one of those earlier L-shaped rear light jobbies then I think I would be rescuing that instead. Have you pulled yours out of hibernation yet Mr Ritmo..?
MrRegieRitmo
All Hillman Avengers have the hockey stick shaped rear lights, only the later Talbot ones didn't. I would reckon it to be in a worse state than the 14 bearing in mind the fact you can barely see it! Mine had a little trip when we moved in August but is now sleeping safely until I can afford to run more than one at once. Hopefully later this year. Mr Lobster
Incredible! How do you find all this stuff?Congratulations on saving it though, can't imagine many people would be brave enough to tackle repairing one that bad. Early R5's are great though, that should be ace when its done.Is AC Williams still a Renault franchise then, what with the ancient signage still being up? Ratdat
I suspect lack of available parts would make the restoration of a rusty R14 very hard. Have you ever enquired about that one? Surely it'd be worth having for parts for yours?A.C.Williams is still alive and well with a Renault franchise despute the old signage out the front. I think they've been there since the late 50's.Nigel, is yours a '72? Has it got a mis-matching rear seat back rest and squab?

carlo
What wonderful cars those mid seventies 5s were, I passed my test in a 1977 5TL, with floor shift. Such comfort and so brilliantly styled. I also had a 1974 4TL and absolutely love the dashboard shift. And what about those heater controls!

Tony had a few bits off this one for that, hence the mis matched rear seat and why I suspect Nigels also has a mis matched rear seat.
